We were lucky to catch up with Tasha Dalal recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tasha, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Moving Box Co was born when I moved homes and single-handedly packed and then taped 110 cardboard boxes only to unpack and break-down every single one of them two days later. My hands were callused, cut up, and rougher than a Brillo sponge. And the worst part was, no one wanted my free cardboard boxes, and why would they – how gross! I ended up having to leave a few out every week for recycle because they wouldn’t take them all at once. I new I never wanted to go through that mess again and if I felt that way, I am sure others out there did too.
Fast forward a few years later when my brother was moving, I tried to convince him to try a different way by using reusable moving boxes and offered to get them for him. But the sticky part was, I couldn’t find anything in Houston! I had heard about reusable boxes booming all over the West and East Coast but why wasn’t this service readily available in Houston? I did try calling one company but they never answered the phone and never called me back and I am not one to wait around. I was left extremely frustrated and disappointed but I tried to channel that into an opportunity!
Enter Moving Box Co, a creative, efficient and ecofriendly service with state-of-the-art moving boxes for your needs. We offer moving boxes and associated accessories within the Greater Houston (and surrounding) areas. The products are delivered to your home in a convenient stack. The boxes are extremely durable, stackable, and are cleaned and sanitized between every use.
No cardboard, No tape, No stress.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a native Houstonian, but I was fortunate to live all over the world as a child but Houston was always our home-base. I am married to my high-school sweetheart (yes cue all the emotions) and we have two daughters who keep us super busy and empty our bank accounts faster than I can fill it.
I have been working in the corporate world first in Consumer Products and then in Oil & Gas since 2007. I learned so much from all the different roles and companies I worked for, but I really wanted to do something for myself. My brother was a huge inspiration for me as he quit his extremely comfortable Oil & Gas job and became a very successful entrepreneur selling ethical Wedding & Engagement rings that help people in need. With the support of my amazing husband and successful brother, I was able to dive into the entrepreneurial world with Moving Box Co.
Our business is very simple. We rent reusable moving boxes to you that are eco-friendly and extremely durable. We deliver them right to your door for free, you pack and move, and then we pick them up for free once you are finished! The best part is that the packages are so cost-effective you will be spending less money than buying cardboard. There is no building boxes involved, no taping boxes and so much easier to move with because the boxes stack and nest in each other.
My entire business is based on exceptional customer service. I answer every call, every text, every message and I strive that every single customer has the best experience possible. I know every customer by name, they are never a number to me. We even have a 100% guarantee when you use our service. This is what sets me apart – no matter how big Moving Box Co becomes, I will never change my model based around customer service.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
For us it has been word of mouth. In a service business like ours, word of mouth is so important. We don’t do a lot of marketing or advertising to keep our costs to the customers as low as possible. When a customer has a great experience, they end up telling their friends & family and spreading the word. We have had several customers who have been Realtors as well who have then spread the word to their clients which has been amazing for us! We will have some partnerships and collabs coming up as well later this year that will further get the word out.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I registered my business in April 2021 after finally coming up with a business plan and was ready to put my 100% into Moving Box Co in hopes to be up and running by the summer. In May 2021 I suddenly ended up in the ER for several medical issues with no conclusion. My entire plan for Moving Box Co was halted as I tried to figure out what was medically going on with me.
What I thought would be a few weeks, ended up being several months of physical therapy, countless number of doctor and specialist appointments and still no good conclusion. I ended up taking my recovery into my own hands and with the help of a select few medical professionals am on a path to recovery.
Through all of this, I didn’t let it interfere with my plans for Moving Box Co. While my launch was delayed a few months, I continued to work with suppliers on my products, form my marketing plans and eventually went live! My original plan was to be able to do a lot of the deliveries at least initially to meet customers and really highlight how women too can succeed in manual labor, but after my injuries, I have had to take the back seat on lifting the boxes for now.
