We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tasha Christensen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tasha below.
Tasha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I think I started at just the right time. I’ve always loved writing, but I didn’t take it seriously as a career path until I had my first child. Once my extra time and energy were taken away in caring for a newborn, I realized I had to consciously decide how I wanted to spend any bit of free time that I had. I finished writing several books with that passion and drive. I didn’t decide to publish until the COVID-19 pandemic hit. I wanted to put something out into the world that provided an escape, a book that was light and fun and made people smile. I published my romantic comedy AS YOU WERE, by Tasha Christensen, the next year.
Tasha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I write the Itaska High series, which is a set of YA romantic comedies that focus on different members of a high school marching band in Minnesota. They can be found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, and many other places for purchase.
The first marching band rom com in the series is called AS YOU WERE, and it was just named the YA winner of the Colorado Author Project for 2023! It’s about a drum major competing against her theater star ex-boyfriend for a prize that would save her struggling band program. The second Itaska High book, MARKING TIME, comes out December 8th, 2023. It’s about a broody girl with a motorcycle who’s determined to hate her new town—and a cute drummer who bets she can convince her otherwise.
I wrote these books to be an escape, something that will make readers laugh and swoon. I have equal numbers of teenage fans as I have adult readers who love the nostalgia of reading about characters in band, just like they were when they were younger. But these books are for band geeks and non-musical people alike. I have many readers who don’t usually read any romance but really enjoyed these books. I’m proud that I’ve written books that so many people can enjoy.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Be involved in your creative community! Attend local author events, buy from local artists, go to festivals, chat with creators. If you’re a creative yourself, get out and meet others like you. We love to help people who are starting out, because we were there once too. Everyone is lifted up by helping each other in this kind of community.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
No two creatives should have the same social media plan. What platforms you’re on, how often you post, and what kind of audience you build all depend on your unique products and capabilities. Don’t stretch yourself too thin by trying to master every single platform. Think about your target demographic – where do they spend their time? How do they decide what to buy and who to follow? This will maximize your impact.
