We recently connected with Tasha Brewton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tasha, thanks for joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
My first job in the health coaching field was coaching employees of a large health organization. I coached team members that had chronic conditions such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, etc. I have previously had experience with only diabetic patients, so I was able to relate that back to the health coach role during my interview.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve been working in the realm of healthcare since I was 16! I worked off and on in pharmacy, both retail and home delivery, and knew healthcare was the space for me. I received my degree in health science and it was during my undergrad career that I was exposed to health education and promotion.
Because I have worked as a health coach for a healthcare system and many different people, I have experience with those who are young and those young at heart. I can provide clients with the space to feel heard and learn how to make real, life long sustainable changes that can benefit their entire family. Being African American, I know our culture, diet and lifestyle so I’m passionate about decreasing our risks to chronic conditions that are more prevalent in our community.
Any advice for managing a team?
In my current professional role I manage and team and the best advice I can give is to always stay in touch with your team. When you have built a solid foundation on trust and communication and your team sees that you care, they will follow your lead. If you aren’t bought in to the success of your program, you can’t expect your team to be. Recognize your high performers and take the time to coach those that need a little extra attention.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back I would stay in the area of healthcare, but I think I would have gone to pharmacy school. Pharmacy is an expanding field with lots of options and I would have still been able to provide the education to patients that I enjoy.
