We recently connected with Tasha and have shared our conversation below.
Tasha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Well, originally I was just looking for someone to do my faux locs. I couldn’t find anyone in Minnesota, so I ended up watching a YouTube video and decided to do it myself. After that, someone hit me up asking if I could do their hair. I was like, “Sure, why not?” lol.
Now mind you, that first install took me 12 hours! I was completely drained, but she was hyped and absolutely loved her hair. That’s when I started thinking, “Hmm… maybe I can turn this into something.”
So I kept watching YouTube videos, bought some courses, and did whatever I needed to do to really perfect my craft. Next client? I cut that time in half — and then some! And that’s how my business was born!
Tasha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Tasha, and I’m the owner of Tresses By Tasha, where I specialize in protective styles and offer my all-natural Tresses By Tasha Organic Hair Growth Oil. My journey into this industry honestly started out of necessity. I was looking for someone to do my faux locs but couldn’t find anyone in Minnesota. So, I did what most of us do — I hit up YouTube, watched a tutorial, and styled my own hair.
Not long after, someone asked if I could do their locs, and I thought, Why not? That first install took me 12 hours! I was exhausted, but she was so happy with her hair that it made me realize I might be onto something. From there, I kept learning — watching videos, taking courses, and perfecting my technique. Before I knew it, I was cutting my install time in half and building a business doing what I love.
In addition to styling, I created Tresses By Tasha Organic Hair Growth Oil to help people struggling with alopecia, thinning edges, breakage, and slow hair growth. My oil is packed with over 10 potent essential oils designed to strengthen, nourish, and restore hair — plus, it’s lightweight enough for daily use. It even works wonders for beard growth!
What sets me apart is my dedication to not only styling hair but also helping my clients achieve healthy, thriving hair underneath their protective styles. I’m proud that my work not only boosts confidence but also supports those dealing with hair struggles.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and my brand, it’s that I’m passionate about what I do. Whether I’m creating a flawless install or helping someone restore their edges with my growth oil, my goal is always to leave my clients feeling confident and cared for.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what really helped build my reputation in my market is me being myself. When clients come in, I make it a point to connect with them, answer all their questions, and ensure they feel comfortable in my space. I think people can sense that I genuinely care, and that’s made a big difference.
On top of that, I’m very intentional about my work. I pay close attention to detail, making sure every style is neat, long-lasting, and customized to fit my clients’ preferences. I also focus on educating my clients, whether it’s sharing tips on maintaining their protective styles or recommending products that will help them achieve healthier hair.
Customer service is also a huge priority for me. I’m big on being responsive, accommodating, and going the extra mile to make sure my clients feel valued.
But honestly, my clients deserve so much credit too. Their support and word-of-mouth referrals have played a huge role in my success. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Honestly, consistency with posting has been key for me. I make it a point to share every style I’ve done, unless it’s a repeat. Whether that’s through reels, photos, or both. I’ve noticed that when I fall off with posting, my engagement drops.
We’re in a time where social media is everything, and if you’re not consistently putting yourself out there, it’s easy for people to forget about you. Staying active keeps me on my audience’s radar and helps my brand stay relevant.
