We were lucky to catch up with Ta’Seon (Dj) Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ta’Seon (Dj), thanks for joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?

I am blessed to say that all of my businesses had one of my family members as a first client! They allowed me to test out products and different recipes while giving honest opinions about their experience, I couldn’t dare leave them out of this question. My first true client came organically by word of mouth. They heard about how great of a job I did with my family events and properties so they gave me a shot. I will never forget how many things I forgot during this job, how slow I was and how uncomfortable I felt in that moment. I persevered through it and received a $15 tip after my work was done. This experience was with my pressure washing company and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

True Ambition, LLC is a multifaceted company that specializes in event rentals, catering, pressure washing and waste management. In 2019, True Ambition was thought up while I was lying on my dorm room floor. While adding a new born son to the picture, and approaching graduation, I knew that I needed a way to make an income. I quickly realized that being a full time student athlete, it would be hard to find a 9-5 that worked with my schedule. This dilemma allowed me to create True Ambition Apparel. Following the successful debut of True Ambition Apparel, I was allotted the opportunity to venture into another business. I bought my first tent in 2020 to utilize with family and friends during the Covid span. This mild gesture developed into 8 tents to date, as well as the addition of add-ons. These add-ons include tables, chairs, heaters, fans, and more. I started pressure washing family members houses for extra income as well. This lead to me getting calls from neighbors about my services. Shortly after that, True Ambition Pressure Washing was created. After successfully managing these three businesses I made the decision to discontinue the clothing line. This would lead to a decrease in outgoing cost and made room for the addition of my most recent businesses, BBQ catering and waste management.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

Business funding has always been a touchy subject for me! We are taught that there are so many loans, grants, and opportunities out there for business owners but the high qualifications make them seem nonexistent. While starting my first business, True Ambition Apparel, I had to borrow from my parents and utilize my refund checks from college. If you are unfamiliar with refund checks they are the left over money that you receive after your tuition has been paid for that particular term. After I got the business up and running I was able to start my future business with that income. After graduating I got a 9-5 to help with business costs as well.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

I built my social media following by using the “wow factor” tactic. People shop with their eyes first. If you can get them to see your work and have consistency behind what you produce, you will grow an audience quickly. I also strive to post content often. My belief is that the more they see what you can produce, the better your chances are of getting them to try you out.
