We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taryn Melgoza a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Taryn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
One of the biggest trends I’m seeing in the photography industry is the rise of DIY photography, especially with how advanced phone cameras have become. I hear it all the time—a new mom excited to book a newborn session hesitates when she sees the price. “Maybe I’ll just take some on my phone,” she says. A week later, she messages again: “I tried, but they just don’t look the same. Can you fit us in?”
And that’s the thing—yes, phone cameras are better than ever, but they still don’t replace the skill, experience, and artistry of a professional photographer. Lighting, posing, and capturing those fleeting newborn moments require more than just a good camera.
Because of this shift, many photographers are seeing fewer casual bookings, as families rely on their phones for everyday memories. But on the flip side, those who market their work as a luxury experience—offering beautifully lit, expertly posed, and timeless images—are thriving. Some photographers are even leaning into this trend by offering smartphone photography workshops, helping parents take better everyday photos while still turning to professionals for the moments that truly matter.
At the end of the day, technology will keep evolving, but it can’t replace the heart, emotion, and storytelling that a professional brings. More often than not, parents who try DIY quickly realize what’s missing—just like that mom who ended up treasuring the images only a professional could capture.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey into photography began in 2009 when my husband gifted me a DSLR camera for our first wedding anniversary. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a passion, as I spent countless hours photographing friends and their children, taking multiple photography classes, and contemplating the idea of turning this beloved pastime into a career.
In 2012, everything changed with the arrival of my first child. I fell head over heels in love with my baby boy and became obsessed with capturing every milestone, tiny detail, and precious moment of his first year. The overwhelming joy he brought into our lives made me realize that I wanted to help other families preserve their own beautiful moments. During that year, I made some life-changing decisions: I left my teaching job and launched my portrait photography business. Fast forward to 2024, and I’m proud to say that I’ve been successfully running my photography studio for over 12 years!
I specialize in newborn, maternity, and family portraiture, offering a luxury experience that takes the stress out of photography for my clients. From wardrobe styling to guiding you through natural, beautiful posing, I ensure that every session results in heirloom-quality images you’ll treasure for generations. My fine art approach sets me apart—I strive to create images that feel classic, emotive, and effortlessly elegant.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me to capture their most important moments. Whether it’s documenting the first days of a newborn’s life or creating timeless portraits of growing families, I know these images will become part of their family’s story. More than just pictures, my goal is to provide art that feels as meaningful as the memories themselves.
For those considering a session, know that my approach is all about creating a relaxed, seamless experience where you can be fully present while I handle the details. I can’t wait to create something beautiful with you!
Have you ever had to pivot?
When my husband was laid off from his oil and gas career in 2015 after more than a decade, our world changed overnight. What had started as a side hobby—photographing families, newborns, and special moments—quickly became our family’s sole source of income for nearly a year and a half. It was both terrifying and empowering.
During this time, I had to shift my mindset from treating photography as a hobby to running it as a **profitable business**. That meant learning to price my work in a way that honored both my skill and the time it took me away from my family. It also meant stepping into the role of a business owner—managing finances, marketing, and client experience with a new level of strategy and intention.
While the transition wasn’t easy, I am incredibly proud that I was able to fully support our family through my art. The experience taught me the value of my time and talent, and I carry that knowledge with me in the way I serve my clients today. What I create isn’t just beautiful images—it’s a legacy of resilience, dedication, and the belief that when we bet on ourselves, we can rise to any challenge.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I first started sharing my work on social media, I had no grand strategy—just a love for photography and a desire to connect with others. Over time, I realized that the key to building an engaged audience wasn’t just about posting pretty pictures; it was about showing up authentically, sharing knowledge, and creating a community where people felt seen, inspired, and valued.
I focused on posting consistently about things my ideal clients wanted to know—whether it was tips on preparing for a session, behind-the-scenes insights, or heartfelt stories about the families I photograph. I also made it a point to share educational content that other photographers could learn from, knowing that there’s enough success to go around for everyone. By adding value to people’s lives—whether through inspiration, education, or a simple moment of joy—I was able to create real connections with my followers.
The biggest lesson? Growing a social media following is a long game. It doesn’t happen overnight, but by showing up regularly, being open and honest, and staying committed, growth will come. My advice to anyone starting out: post often, engage with your audience, and don’t be afraid to share your real self. People don’t just follow businesses—they follow people. And when you build a space that feels welcoming and genuine, your audience will grow naturally over time.
