Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taryn Jerdon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Taryn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The Making of MMU (Memphis Made University)
MMU didn’t start off as a media company. After I had my son at 19 I was constantly thinking of ways to make money without going to “work”. I knew as a mother my time was valuable and working a traditional jobs was limiting. I had to come up with something and having my own business just made so much sense.
Over the the years my business evolved from retailing costume jewelry to making custom T-shirts. I was able to make enough money to go back to college full time while using my business income. To support myself and my son. I learned how to make T-shirts on YouTube and that gave me the idea for my clothing line that I always dreamed of having. Memphis being the backdrop for the knowledge I gained growing up here. Memphis Made me and the clothing line embodies that.
Memphis Made University is all able alchemizing what your learned and using what you have to do so. Learning all I needed to know about business through trail and error wasn’t always glamorous but Memphis isn’t either. The possibilities are endless and that’s the beauty in it.
I create content that is amided at teaching, learning and showing everything beautifully.

Taryn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, I’m Taryn a 33 year old Entrepreneur and Mother from Memphis, TN. I’m a traveling photographer that specializes in Studio, Event & Product photography for individuals and entrepreneurs alike. I also have a background with garment making and can consult clothing lines manufacturer clothing and products from scratch and ways to brand those products.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
As a young mother I wanted to start a business but lacked knowledge and resources. I wanted to start a business ,so like any millennial I turned to the internet for ideas. YouTube taught me how to make custom tshirts moving a craft cutter. Started as a hobby making things for family and friends. After a few years of honing my craft I started to find vendors and outsource graphics and materials to produce higher orders. Using social media platforms to promote products and services. Later picking up photography for higher quality content.

Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
Recently I’ve been going through a medical condition induced by long term steriod use and eczema due to my health I was not physically able to work and was sometimes mentally draining. During this time I’ve gotten better and learned to cope with the symptoms and heal for the sake of my business and children. Grateful for my ability to be here to continue in business and expand my services creatively.
