We were lucky to catch up with Taryn Becchina recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Taryn, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I’ve taken was starting my business! I’m sure that’s the answer you were expecting but let me explain. I’ve always had a passion for photography but never thought it would or could take me anywhere. I was also passionate about exercise science, or so I thought. I graduated from ASU with a degree in exercise science and became a health coordinator for special needs adults & kids.
While that job was extremely rewarding, my heart was pulling me in a direction I wouldn’t have ever expected, photography. My passion for photography rekindled after I married my husband. The dream of being a wedding photographer was becoming bigger and bigger. I must have talked my husband’s ear off about it because one day he sat me down, pulled up the canon website and made me order my new camera. From there I began to practice, practice & practice. I fell so in love with it that I just couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else anymore. After a LOT of thought, doubt, fear & hope, I applied for my LLC and jumped in head first. It was terrifying but exciting at the same time. I was starting a business, one I had DREAMED of.
About 8 months in I decided to take it to the next level and go full time with photo. I can’t even begin to tell you how scared I was to quit my 9-5 but I did and it was beyond worth it. Now I am living my out my dream, working with the best clients & building a business that I am so proud of.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Photography has so many different niches and I knew I was passionate about one in particular- wedding photography. I LOVE weddings. I love capturing weddings even more! Because the wedding day is such a special event I wanted to make sure I had as much experience as possible going into this industry. I second shot & assisted other established photographers to gain the experience I wanted. I’ve also invested heavily in my education to continue to grow & learn.
Serving my clients is at the forefront of my business. I wouldn’t be where I am without them so providing an awesome client experience is my top priority. I want my clients to feel like their best friend is showing up to capture their day. I want my clients to feel like I’m investing back into them just as much as they are into me! Trust me, I’ll shed tears at your wedding!
I’m so proud of how far my business has come, all the incredible people I’ve worked with and opportunities I’ve had. My goal for my work is to create timeless photos where you can feel the emotions just like you did on that day. Building a connection with my couples, being their hype-woman & capturing their day- what more could I ask for? I truly love what I do.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being my authentic self. When I let my audience see the real me- imperfect & dorky- I noticed a huge, positive shift in my business. I have been able to connect with like-minded creatives, build an awesome circle and draw in my “dream” clients!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Aside from social media, word of mouth! My top priority is creating an incredible client experience from start to finish (booking to wedding day). When my clients are happy, they tell their friends & share my work all over! That has been such a strong form of growth for business.
