We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taryn Archibald. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taryn below.
Hi Taryn, thanks for joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Being a business owner has it’s ups and downs, just as any job or career. I currently still work as a medical assistant to a dermatopathologist Mohs Surgeon during the week so I am currently on both ends of the spectrum. On one hand, it’s easy to work for someone else; you don’t have to take on the liability and risks, you’re not the one to make the rules and enforce them, you’re not the one on the hook if the business if unsuccessful, but it’s also not fun waking up at 7 am and dedicating myself and my time 9.5 hours out of the day just to come home and have a few hours to myself before having to do it all over again. Being an entrepreneur in the long run, is so much more than just owning a business. A while back, I read a quote that said you can only work so many hours in a day, but the amount of products you can sell in a day is endless. Of course there’s been many times in the past where I have questioned whether or not this is for me, if I should just go back to school and do something else, if I’m making the right decision or if I should just forget about my company Pretty Girl Skyn, but I know there are peaks and valleys with everything and remaining consistent – even with no sales – is key. On my entrepreneurial journey, there have been many ups and downs in learning the industry, learning the legal requirements of owning a business, keeping the creative juices flowing when it seems like the industry is saturated, remaining positive and staying consistent even when I’m drained, but at this point I wouldn’t trade it for anything. In the age of social media, you can become financially free, solve age old problems for people globally, run a company people are proud of and excited to work at, and sell bomb products over multiple outlets. As a business owner, the sky’s the limit!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I love answering this question! I’ve always been fascinated with makeup and the transformations it can create. Over the years, my love for makeup blossomed and with the discovery of Youtube there was no stopping me. When I reached the age that I was allowed to wear makeup, I wore it everyday for a few years not fully understanding that makeup is like paint, but your skin is the canvas and without a nice, smooth canvas it doesn’t matter what kind of paint you use, your painting isn’t going to come out looking the best. I’ve never had bad skin, but I’ve always suffered from oily skin which would cause acne which would cause hyperpigmentation and scaring due to my brown skin complexion. I started using my beloved YouTube to instead watch skincare routines and reviews instead of makeup reviews and became fascinated with learning which ingredients help with what and which products are good for certain skin types. A few years passed and my love for makeup died down as I became more in love with my bare skin (and the idea of not spending hours in the bathroom applying makeup!). I decided to get my license as a Full Specialist in the state of Florida at the beginning of 2021, where I learned to do facials, waxing, pedicures, manicures, eyelash extensions, eyebrow and eyelash tinting, and basic makeup. While in school, I discovered a few videos on making whipped body butters and with the encouragement of my classmates I decided to look into manufacturing my own skincare and body care products. After months of researching ingredients, scents and recipes and manufacturing different products, I had to research the requirements of starting a business in Florida and think about WHY I was starting a skincare business. Aside from wanting financial freedom, why was I starting a skincare and body care business when there’s thousands of brands out there already? It’s as simple as pretty girls want pretty skin. I am an expert at knowing which ingredients help with certain things not just because of my education, but my years of watching youtube videos. That’s the whole reason, I stopped wearing makeup: I wanted to feel pretty without makeup and have pretty skin without makeup. I know I’m not the only one, there are billions of dollars every year spent on the skincare industry. I also know I’m not the only one with acne prone, oily, hyper pigmented skin, or dry skin on my body. My company, Pretty Girl Skyn LLC is for pretty girls who want pretty skin. Being fun and relatable is also a core value to my company, which is why we’re always posting memes on our Instagram and using popular sounds on our Tiktoks. I come up with the names for my scented body care products from things I see in pop culture to keep things fun and cute including “Always Be My Baby”, “Candy Crush”, “Let that Mango” and more.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My professionalism. There are thousands of skincare and body care companies, including brands with CEOs and small businesses. I try to look at things as if I was a consumer deciding whether or not I wanted to try my products. If my pictures are poor quality, there’s no customer reviews, the prices are higher or lower than the competition, the website is hard to navigate or the owner seems impersonal, I’m probably not going to buy from that company, big or small. I am meticulous in taking and editing my pictures, making sure the quality is up to my standards, and maintaining my website myself. It’s what sets you aside from your competitors and builds customer loyalty.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I try and keep everything personal. Hand written notes, messaging them on social media, etc. I try to keep in touch with my pretty girls and make sure they’re enjoying their products. If they tag me on Instagram when they initially received their products, I try and message them a few weeks later to see if they’re still enjoying the products and if there is any improvements that need to made. I usually will give a coupon code to customers who place an order that’s written on their packing slip, for them to use on their next purchase. On random orders I’ll include a product that I think they will enjoy or pairs will with whatever they ordered, which usually results in them liking it and actually buying it in the future along with other items.
