We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tarsha Campbell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tarsha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
First of all, thank you for the privilege to share. I’m always thrilled when I can do so, with hopes it will empower and inspire others!
I love the question. I’m really BIG on leaving a legacy. I call it “legacy living.” I often tell those I coach in my coaching practice and those I help in my publishing business, that someone needs to know you were here when you’re dead and gone. How will you leave your mark in the world? So, one of the things I hope for in regards to my legacy is how will I help those I service in my businesses leave their mark and establish their legacies.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Please allow me first to formally introduce myself. My name is Tarsha Campbell. I’m a book publisher and author of eight popular books. I also serve my fellow human beings as a certified empowerment coach and speaker. I passionately enjoy and love what I do!
As an entrepreneur, my story and journey started many years ago when my husband and I decided to have our first child. This of course, was all new to us, so we both decided we would sacrifice and live on one income so I could be a stay-at-home mom and give quality time and attention to our young daughter.
It was during this rewarding time, I decided to write and publish my first book. Even though at the time, I didn’t know much about book publishing and what it took to self-publish my first book, I set forth to make it happen! This was all new territory for me. My first career was far from what I was setting out to do. Matter-of-fact, I didn’t even know how to turn on the big clunky desktop computer we had at the time. Nor was I the greatest typist or knew much about graphic design and how to create a professional book layout. I, however, was all in and willing to test my new wings on this self-appointed project as a first-time author and publisher.
Once the book was finally published and distributed through my grass-root efforts, doors started opening for me to share, teach and host workshops on the subject of my book. Soon after receiving requests to share and teach, I also started getting requests from others asking could I help them publish their books. It was at this point my husband said to me, “If you’re going to be serious about helping others professionally publish their books, you need to go learn more about this industry.” This little nudge from my husband was the catalyst that helped me move more deeply into book publishing and graphic design. After some time, and with calculated discipline, I was armed with more knowledge, insight, and courage to help others publish their books. I then launched my business DOMINIONHOUSE Publishing & Design, LLC., and the rest is history.
I later started my speaking, coaching, and consulting business called Tarsha Campbell Empowers, LLC. In this business I’m passionate about helping others find and fulfill their life purpose, and launch their dreams.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what helped me build my reputation within in my market is staying true to my business core values. In order to do that, I first had to understand what core values were and then clarify them for my personal life and business.
Core values for me, are my foundational beliefs that anchor and stabilize me. They help bring balance in my life. They are what I call my non-negotiables traits that convey to the world who I am and what I stand for. For my businesses, three of my top core values are integrity, consistency, and excellence. Building and running my businesses with these core values at heart has helped me build a favorable and award winning reputation within my market and community.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for new clients for me has been word of mouth. Many of my business clients were sent my way because of my successful engagement with the general public or successfully providing service to clients who referred prospective clients to me.
Word of mouth marketing can be huge source for generating new clients in any industry. Over the recent years, we have seen this even more so with the surge of online reviews. I know personally when I’m searching for a vendor, product or service I include reading the reviews. The reviews in my opinion, serve as word of mouth marketing to let me know if I may have a great experience with the vendor, product or service, or should I run the other way. I would encourage any business owner and corporation (large or small) to remember how you treated your last customer or client can determine whether you will get the chance to serve the next customer or client. It’s important to serve them well.
