We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tarrin Cox a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tarrin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
When I look back over my time as a business owner, I sometimes wish that I would have begun sooner. I do not regret any choices or decisions made, just wish I would have made them sooner.
I have always had a passion for haircare, discovered this passion as a little girl. Playing in my dolls hair, watching my aunt whom at the time was a licensed cosmetologist, taking everything in and then trying to do it myself. Teaching myself to braid at a young age, practicing on all of my little cousin’s hair.
As I got older my parents stressed college, but I always knew deep in my heart I wanted to do hair. I took cosmetology courses all 4 years of high school earning credited hours towards my licensing so once graduated I would be able to take state board and get to work in a salon. Upon graduating in 2010 my parents gave me 1 option college.
So I enrolled at Ga Southern University completing my 2 year degree in early childhood and education. I worked in childcare for 2 years then stepped out on faith in 2014 enrolling at Empire Dunwoody to start my cosmetology journey. I encountered many trials and tribulations but I did complete school and obtained my license in 2017. I quickly begin working in salons as a stylist paying booth rent. After years of working as a booth stylist I again stepped out on faith in 2020 opening my first salon suite, BeYOUtiful Stylez by Tee Salon. With that being said if i followed MY DREAMS from the beginning back in 2010 I could be much further and impactful.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
This past September of 2022, I injured my right foot and ankle. Originally I thought it was a basic sprain until I tried to bare weight. I then noticed that my foot was swollen 3x its ordinal size and discolored to the visual eye. My husband then quickly took me to the emergency where they simply put me in a brace and referred me to a specialist. Upon my visit I am told that I have 3 torn ligaments and nerve damage in my distribution system which then I was placed in a hard cast which I am still in as of January 2023. This was hard for me because I need my feet to work, and run my salon. To show up for my clients. I had doctors orders to be completely off of my feet until he releases me and the cast is off. So this faced me with a huge decision, disregard the Doctor’s orders and continue taking clients sitting or be obedient in this season. I choose to disobey and I took clients my first 3 weeks in my cast which ultimately affected my healing process. So I had no other choice but to close the doors of my salon late October of 2022. And Follow the doctors orders. During this process I have learned so much about myself and trusting the process even when you don’t want to.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
So as I mentioned I had to close my salon which was my main source of income in October 2022. But I had another talent to fall back on. Which was customizing t shirts and hoodies and hand making hair bonnets. All of these things I can do sitting down and respecting the doctors wishes. So I dusted off the old heat press and begin designing. I started with ideas I had jotted down in a journal years ago. I always recommend business owners to journal and write down any idea that comes to mind. Once I started to create I sent those creations out to family and friends, explained my circumstances and that this was my new way of bringing income into my household. I asked for them to share on their social medias because even if they could not support financially, someone else may be able to. And that it would help to reach different audiences and platforms.
