Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tarisha Finch. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tarisha, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Let me start by saying that my sister Kendeja Ealy is a key reason why I started doing hair, as well as my own hair. As a child, I observed her doing her own makeup and hair. As a result, whenever she would do her hair, I would be in the bathroom with her watching and asking a lot of questions. Later, when I started making money from babysitting (when I was between 14 and 15 years old), I would buy cheap braiding hair and braid my own hair using the techniques my older sister had taught me. I started accepting clients when I was about 16 and progressed up from there. I began studying how to do locs and styles in 2020 when my attention shifted to locs. I’ve been doing this for three years now and I adore every aspect of it. Since the hair industry is everything I have ever wanted as a child and still do today, I am genuinely quite pleased of myself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
19-year-old Tarisha here. Loc stylist is who I am. Since the age of 14, I’ve been a hair stylist. When I was 15 years old, I began braiding, and when I was 17, I began doing locs. With locs, I perform styles that my clients show me. It might be difficult at times, but there is nothing I can’t do. Because of the fantastic people I’ve met and the fact that some of them are like family to me, I’m glad I expanded and decided to do locs rather than braiding. I sincerely thank them for coming to me.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I increased my following on social media by using hashtags, posting my work, telling others at school what I do, and, not to be forgotten, having friends and family promote my work on sites like Instagram, SnapChat, and Facebook. I’m going to network a lot more this year than I have in the past. Since I support hairdressers, barbers, muas, and other professionals they support me as well. My recommendation is to publish, use hashtags, spread the word, on your work and maintain consistency if you want to grow your social media following.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that because people knew I braided hair before I started doing locs, it helped me establish a good name in my own industry. Many of my male friends came to me when I first started doing locs, and they seemed a little happy that I was beginning to learn how to do locs since the majority of them already have locs. But aside from that, my friends shared my work every time I posted it and posted it to their stories so that others could discover it. So I believe that’s what helped me establish my reputation in my market.
