We were lucky to catch up with Tarion recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tarion thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I can distinctly remember one night while being a cater waiter in NYC for one of those televised award shows and watching the singers on stage in overwhelming awe and admiration. In that moment I thought to myself, “that’s gotta be my next move! I have to start living my life through my art.” From that moment on, I decided that if I was going tome my living through my artistry in one way or another. I decided that I would spend just as much time looking for and creating opportunities for myself as I had spent on growing my craft and becoming a better actor, singer, performer. The process was far from easy! It felt almost like being the new kid on the first day of school. It seemed as if everyone around me had ‘figured it out’ and I was simply standing around still trying to figure out which way was up. There were endless back and forth emails and audition submissions and “no you’re not right for this part” and “we’ll get back to you’s” that never got back to me. In the midst of all of this, however, there was one thing I knew. I was not going to give up! Eventually through consistency, the support of family and friends, and many long sleepless nights of scrolling and submitting myself to castings, being in the studio from night fall to sunrise, taking dance classes at my local studios, I found my flow and built a network of connections and a net worth of experience that has really helped to shape and build my career. Today I fully support myself only artistry through gigs all over the country and world, and I’m still striving to reach new heights every day, but I think that’s a part of the reason that I stay motivated to keep going, always keeping in mind that there is always more to explore, accomplish, and do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello beautiful people, my name is Tarion and I’m a singer, actor and dancer who was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Houston, Texas. Like many R&B-pop artist and actors I’d have to say that I got my start in church and school plays. According to my grandma, one fateful Sunday at church, around the age of three I felt so moved by the choir during one of their songs that I stood up in the pew and proceeded to take a solo all my own. While I don’t personally remember that specific event myself, I do know that for as long as I can remember, I’ve known that this is what I want to do with my life and I’ve been walking in that dream ever since. It’s been one of the most challenging, rewarding, difficult, joy-bringing, self reflecting, awe-educing experiences I’ve had in my life. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to perform in places like The Palazzo Versace Hotel in Dubai, work with brands like Nike, Samsung and Uniqlo, been a part of original tv shows like “Situationships”, and even worked with the most Grammy decorated artist of all time, Beyoncé . I’ve been able to successfully release six singles in two languages across all music streaming platforms around the world with the help of my brother from another mother/producer prodbyZiG and my journey is still continuing to unfold everyday. I’d say the thing I’m most proud of out of all of this is not so much the work I’ve been blessed to do, or the places I’ve been grateful to go, or even the big names I’ve been able to brush shoulders with, but I’m most proud of the fact that through the ups, downs and everything in between I’ve kept going no matter what. I think no matter the discipline, industry, or dream, the most vital part is to remember why you got started in the first place and hold on to that dream the whole marathon through.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My journey both artistic and personal has been littered with unbelievebly high-highs and wildly humbling low-lows. Ive experienced everything from being able to work on major projects with some of my childhood heroes to losing my mom to cancer almost unexpectedly and a myriad of things in between. I would say that my overall resilience to the many adversities that have crossed my path in life is rooted in a few very simple things.
My love for my family & friends who keep me motivated and inspired through my valleys and keep me grounded at my peaks.
My belief that I can always turn pain into purpose. The idea that if I use it then it might help someone else.
My desire to leave the planet a better place than I found it.
My faith in Ggod.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the connectivity it gives me to the human experience. We are able to take what’s usually a visceral experience and bring it to life in away that speaks to a triumph, or struggle, or pain, or joy that we collectively share in one way or another. Being able to connect to our unified experience and evoke some kind of experience or response in people from all walks of life is an experience that I can only really equate to the experience of love.
