We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taran OBrien . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taran below.
Taran, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My sister wanted a unique bouquet for her wedding. So I created a bouquet of hand sewn fabric flowers, adorned with pearl and crystal brooches.
After receiving such positive feedback, I decided to try my hand at custom requests and listed photo examples on Etsy. From bouquets, we’ve grown to add signage and laser products for weddings and events.
Taran, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always been the crafty, DIY type of person and I LOVE party planning. Combining the two and designing decor for other people’s events is a dream business for me.
My style is rustic, yet classic and elegant. I started with fabric wedding bouquets and have grown by adding a commercial laser to our business, which has opened the doors to add signage, cake toppers and charms, engraved wedding dress hangers, gifts and more!
I’m most proud of being able work from home and raise our four children, while showing them that a full time mom can also have a full time career, if you’re willing to put the work in. Instilling these values in our kids has been the most rewarding part of owning this business. Our oldest even helps out with packaging, so she’s learning the value of hard work as well! Win-win!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Covid. The biggest problem with covid is that ALL weddings and events were cancelled. All sales completely stopped, as no one needed event decor. I needed to pivot and add items that were not exclusively for events. I came out of covid doubling my revenue from the year before. Pretty proud of that!
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I’ve self funded every part of my business. We started small, not much over head to hand sew fabric flowers. After saving for a few years. We purchased a commercial laser with cash. We’ve never had business debt and I plan to continue this way.
