We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tara Zeller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tara below.
Alright, Tara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
My journey into health started when I was a child. As a kid, I never felt comfortable in my own body. I was always bloated, fatigued, and never really felt well. My family would say I was a chubby, lazy kid. I had the custom of regular doses of antibiotics throughout my childhood, leaving me with a terrible, non-functioning gut with a bowel movement occurring every 7-10 days that would leave me like a brick of days of waste built up and compacted over time. I had no motivation or energy. There was no one to teach me about how the body was supposed to function. I just had a sense that my body didn’t work like the others. I felt a lot of shame that my body didn’t look and seem to work like the other bodies. I was just unlucky I guessed, destined to be “fat and lazy”, unattractive, and uncomfortable indefinitely. The impact being that I never felt like I could really engage with my peers. Physically I couldn’t keep up, but also because I felt so much shame about it. I never wanted to put myself in a situation where I could possibly be judged for my bloated belly. I became acutely sensitive to my body, I heard every symptom loudly.
Over the years these health imbalances compounded to manifest as the worst case of cystic acne as a teenager, which stayed at bay only as long as I never stopped taking higher and higher doses of antibiotics. By the time hormones kicked in, my gut and liver were so damaged my cycle never had a chance at being healthy. And what is the medical treatment for irregular periods in a 14 year old you may ask? Why birth control of course! Let’s throw synthetic hormones in there barely after puberty, great idea! Plus all my junior high friends were doing it, so at least I got some social clout. I also got further dysregulation of my hormones and pre-cancerous lesions on my cervix from all the synthetic hormones by the time I was 20.
Being in my 20s having cystic adult acne, severe hormone imbalance, pre-cancerous, and still not pooping more than once a week, I was in crisis and feeling all of it, not only impacted my physical state, but my emotional and spiritual state as well. A voice within me, born out of my state of constant physical suffering began to guide me away from what I knew and towards an ancient wisdom that began to whisper to me telling me there must be another way. A more natural way, aligned with a knowledge and power that transcends a fleeting point in human understanding of health and medicine.
At this point I had already completed massage school and becoming a Dr of Chiropractic was the next intuitive step. I started seeing a Naturopath, started doing my own research, studied chiropractic philosophy and terrain theory. Not only studying theory but learning biochemistry and physiology to back up the pure fact that the body can and will heal itself with the right terrain and in a healthy environment with enough natural resources. I learned while I healed the years and layers of physical and chemical imbalances that had compounded over my life, the wounded healer archetype guiding me along the way.
I healed my gut, my liver, and my hormones, and for the first time since age 14, I had clear beautiful skin and a regular period. Whoa! This was my eureka moment! It took 2 years of concentrated efforts and a combination of the support of my naturopath and my own building knowledge and willingness for self experimentation. By the time I graduated I was healthier than I had ever been. I started my practice as a functional medicine practice and began to help others find the right tools to heal themselves from the inside out. I would spend hours at night on one case. Looking at all of the labs, genetics, details and biochemical pathways of each individual patient. Putting the same level of care, research and knowledge into every person as if it was my own body. I would spend countless hours on just one person’s case, looking back now I wonder where all the brainpower and motivation came from without IVs! But I was at my healthiest, I had healed myself from the inside out and I was living a vibrant life.
Then things started to change. My body started to present with a completely different set of symptoms than I had ever experienced before. I became fatigued again after just 3 years of moving back to Colorado and starting my practice. I was getting a joining point and developed raynaud’s. Was it the stress? The long work hours? Could it really affect me this badly? I did some blood work and found an autoimmune process happening and hashimoto’s. What? That’s crazy! I racked my brain. I know it wasn’t my diet because I ate so clean. I understood autoimmune disease at this point because of my studies. It didn’t just happen randomly. There are always triggers.. Maybe it was the tick bite 3 years back and I had Lyme disease. I couldn’t think of anything else that could possibly be. And then my mother-in-law cam to stay with me.
My mother in law had had a recurrence of her breast cancer and after 2 years on Gerson Therapy had almost lost hope. When my own mother had breast cancer while I was in school, I had researched alternative therapies and had recommended her to receive IV Vitamin C at that time which she successfully cleared her cancer. So I decided I needed to learn IV therapy now for myself and help my mother in law and others heal from cancer. Also I knew something was seriously wrong with my health at that time so I was hopeful it could help me as well. I had attended an IV therapy course with one of my best friends Jason and he even suggested we make it into a business beyond just private practice.
So my mother in law came to stay with me and receive IV therapy, and she is the one who told me I had mold. And boy did I have mold! It was everywhere, lurking behind the walls and beneath the floors. A silent killer causing destruction to mine and my family’s health. We did everything you weren’t supposed to do. A simple bathroom remodel to get rid of mold turned into the ground zero of my deterioration into full on lupus. And I fell hard.
My hair started falling out, I could barely make it through a few hours of being awake before needing a nap, I was allergic to the sun, if I spent more than 15 minutes in the sun my lips and chest would burst into open lesions that bled and stung to the point I could barely eat anything. Throw in a gout attacks, deep depression, and loss of kidney function, and this was my new normal. The oral supplementation, food avoidance, and plant medicines weren’t working fast enough, my life was falling apart before my eyes. I had to face the facts that I couldn’t continue to help others in my practice when my body and mind were literally falling apart at an alarming rate. But as always the wounded healer was at my side. It whispered to me at night as I sobbed that I will find the way, that I can overcome this difficult time. I just needed to dig deep and find that power within myself to heal.
The universe lined up for me to have the tools I needed. I had dedicated and knowledgeable doctors that have been doing this work for decades teaching me and supplying me with the IV nutrients I need to heal. And I did heal. I found the way, and I did it with IV nutrient therapy, and faith in my ability to heal.. Not steroids, not immune suppressants, not diet, or medicine. The power within my body healed me with the right resources, the right environment, and by removing the interferences to that innate capacity.
The lessons I learned:
You must have the desire, patience, and dedication to yourself in order to heal.
You can’t heal in the same environment that made you sick in the first place.
The body has the innate ability to heal itself if provided the resources it needs and you remove the interferences getting in the way of those self healing mechanisms.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I may have covered a lot of this in the previous question……
My work is about supporting the optimal health, wellness, longevity, and quality of life of my clients. It makes me proud to be able to offer a service that transforms health and therefore transforms lives.
I have lived my journey and struggled through it at times to be able to prevent that same struggle for others.
IV therapy works on a foundational level to provide the body what it needs to activate its self healing mechanisms to decrease inflammation, increase metabolism, and balance the immune system.
V Nutrition clients utilize IV Nutrient Therapy to support both acute and chronic conditions. Some of our clients often utilize IV Nutrient therapy to replace fluid or nutrition to maintain health or to support the body’s systems that may have been damaged by certain conditions, unhealthy lifestyle habits, or assaults to the body such as chemical, emotional, are physical stressors that place excess nutritional demands on their bodies.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and most IV Nutrition clients understand this. They also know that nutrition administered in this manner bypasses the gut where the vitamins, nutrients, and amino acids can be delivered directly to the body’s tissues where it can accelerate the self-regenerating capacities of the body.
The body has an innate intelligence capable of restoring health and balance. Disease is created by interferences to the body’s self-healing capacity and deficiencies of foundational nutrients and vitamins.
The typical diet, even if we perceive it as “healthy” does not make up for the nutrient loss we experience due to stress, chronic stealth infections, heavy metal and chemical toxicities we are exposed to daily, and depleted nutrients in our soils. We require higher levels of nutrients to repair tissue, restore energy, offset oxidative stress and free radicals, and regenerate our cells.
Achieving optimal health is possible through replenishing the body with vital nutrients lost through workout, stress, injury, inflammation and illness.
The body is designed to heal and regenerate, but because of our environment, our food, and stress, overtime our bodies lose the ability to adapt and continue to heal and repair. When we give the body high quality nutrients, it regains its self-healing capacity.
Symptoms are the body’s way of telling us our health is not optimal. By the time we are experiencing signs and symptoms such as fatigue, pain, inflammation and weight gain, we have already been depleted of vital nutrients for some time.
I am proud that I have helped t0 make this profound therapy more affordable and accessible to everyone regardless of where they are on their health journey. This empowers people in their health and in their lives through understanding their bodies profound ability and through health autonomy.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Passion, Faith & Humility.
Passion & Faith fueled me to continue and keep going when I was struggling the most. When my body was falling apart, and also when I felt that no one was ever going to understand how powerful IV Nutrient therapy can be.
Humility has served me in the sense that I know it is the power of the body that can heal. Nobody can heal another, you can only health yourself. I have always been in awe of the power of the body and humble enough to know that I am merely just a huge fan of the power of the body and seek to serve that power in every body.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my business partner in school. We were both studying for our doctorate degrees and he reached out to rent a room in my house. Our relationship grew through our time at school. We survived together., we helped each other study and made sure we had some fun a long the way as well. After we graduated we went our separate ways for a while, I started a functional medicine practice, and he started a paleo food company. We checked in with each other over the next few years, and he would always ask me what I was doing to complete my CEUs (continuing education) for our degrees. Because he was running a large food company he wasn’t practicing, but wanted to keep his license active. So he would always go along we me to whatever I was doing for CEUs. So he cam along for my training in IV Nutrient Therapy. He was inspired in that training and encouraged me to start a business with him. It started with one small clinic and has grown into a franchise of over 30 location over the past 5 years.
