We were lucky to catch up with Tara Towler Cumby recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
I have learned a few lessons in the mental health field. The most valuable lesson I learned when I was an in-home mental health therapist was to be prepared for anything and set boundaries. I learned how to be a traveling therapist in the homes of children so my car became my office. I would bring art supplies and therapy toys to the homes of my clients. In-home therapy offers an up-close understanding of clients’ lives, demanding a nuanced approach that incorporates the lessons learned to provide effective and empathetic care. I was given a close-up picture of their daily lives which helped me understand the behaviors and approaches that would and would not work for these clients. I came to understand how to be the best therapist for my clients as I was in their world and how vulnerable this was for them. Now being in private practice and offering online appointments I am able to use these lessons but in a different manner to help my clients.
Tara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a licensed and certified counselor with expertise in trauma-focused therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, addiction counseling, and clinical evaluation. My name is Tara, and I specialize in helping women through life changes, motherhood, postpartum depression, anxiety, addiction, and trauma.
My primary approach is cognitive behavior therapy, which involves working with clients to identify and change harmful thoughts and behaviors. I have a particular passion for aiding women who are struggling with postpartum depression, pregnancy loss, and termination, as well as those experiencing anxiety and depression related to motherhood. As a mom, I understand how challenging motherhood can be. My clients come to me as I have been through similar motherhood ups and downs.
I also help both men and women with addiction concerns, guiding them through the process of accepting their addiction and taking steps toward a healthier life.
I work with adults dealing with traumas, depression, and anxiety. I use CBT and IFS to work with clients who are trying to get through trauma. I am trained in trauma information and a Certified Trauma Specialist. I am passionate in developing clients’ emotional and cognitive functions to help meet their needs and goals in therapy and in life. I am married and is a mom of two boys and understand motherhood’s challenges. Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing therapists involves a unique set of considerations due to the nature of their work and the importance of their well-being. As a therapist, I take into consideration the demands of the job. I encourage my team of therapists to take time for self-care. I offer free supervision and guidance to my therapists as other practices charge for this. We meet as a team every month to do a team-building exercises or just to spend time with each other.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building a strong reputation in the therapy market involves a blend of professional expertise, ethical practice, effective communication, and establishing trust with clients. I believe that having trust with your clients can help you succeed in the private practice market as your clients are free advertisement as they begin to tell others about you. I have so many clients refer to me which is wonderful as they trust me and my team.
