We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tara Sophia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I love this question, lol because my life is all about taking risk. Ok, so I’m a Detroit girl born and raised but in February of 2013 I left that world behind. Although I loved being born and raised in Detroit, Michigan because it’s where most of my family is, I knew I wanted to get away and see more.
Many people don’t know that even though I was raised as a city girl, I’m really a country girl with deep southern roots. I wanted to be close to something that felt more like that. In February of 2013, I took that risk and left my hometown to hit the highway and start a new life which put me on an adventure that I am still on to this day, lol.
Tara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a #T1DMom, Wellness Educator/Content Creator, Certified Holistic Lifestyle Coach & The Proud Podcast Host And Producer Of The Health And Wealth Pod Talk On YouTube.
Prior to starting this journey to relaunching my career in Wellness, I actually worked in healthcare for 11 long years. I called those years my growing years. During my time in healthcare, I wasn’t just going healthcare, I was busy baby, lol. I started several small businesses, worked off end jobs alongside healthcare and took breaks to explore myself to get to know who I truly am.
After awhile, I realized it was my time to just quit that field and figure out my truth. I knew I wanted to help people which is why I stayed in healthcare so long, but I didn’t want to do it that way. So after contemplating on leaving for the last 3 years of my 11 year career in healthcare, I did it. I took a leap and quit to see what else was out there.
After a few months of seeing where I was most passionate, I enrolled to gain my certification as a Life Coach. Two years later, I went back to gain my next certification in Holistic Health.
But I wasn’t done yet, I decided to explore a little more. I became certified as a Yoga Instructor but later realized teaching yoga full time wasn’t really my thing.
Then of course life happened and I went through some deep shit (excuse my language) so I began journaling my feelings about what I was going through.
Journaling led me to turning on my camera to share it all on screen which launched my return to podcasting, something I had also done in my past.
Funny Fact- I was actually going to pursue a career in broadcasting before I got into healthcare but I let others ruin my confidence in that and chose healthcare.
Now I’m following my own voice and using all of my experiences, education and style to put my spin on how I want Wellness to look for me and those who want something different than what traditional wellness is.
I told myself if I can spend 11 years working in a career that wasn’t my first choice, then I can surely finally give this is a try now because it’s what I’ve always been passionate about before podcasting was even podcasting.
I was hesitant at first to make this something that I could take serious for myself and have others see me as someone they need to watch because I never saw anyone do what I’m doing now.
So instead of waiting for that example, seeking validation in everyone else, I decided to go for it and be that for myself because I owe to my younger self to be the baddest Podcaster I’ve always wanted to be in these Wellness streets!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Wooh, this questions follows up my previous question.
Let’s Go…..
If I could go back, honestly I would have never worked in healthcare because although I love helping people live better, my heart was never truly into that type of work. I forced myself to do it, which hardened me over the years.
I listened to those who told me to play it safe and don’t be stupid thinking a career could happen for me in broadcasting
If those naysayers could see me now, not a sound would be heard because look at the world now. Every where we turn broadcasting and media are running the world in so many ways.
Honestly, wait pause…..
Answering this question makes me cry because the way I feel now about the work I’m doing is the way I felt back that as a young girl fresh out high school ready to be on air taking over the world.
I felt so alive and bold and courageous and burning with excitement, I’m finally feeling that again.
Except this time, I’m a full grown woman, a mom, business owner and I’m way more sure of myself now than I ever was back then. I’m making my mark on this world and I’m no longer letting anyone change my mind about it!
It used to scare me, but I’m
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Passion, Confidence And A Strong Relationship With God are what’s needed in this field for sure.
I start off with passion because you have to love what you do, if you don’t nothing you do will mean anything. You’ll find yourself working 11+ years chasing a dream someone implanted in your mind being unhappy year after year.
I lived that life and it broke my heart, I’m now rebuilding those pieces to heal my heart and smile again.
Passion is important because it gives us drive to do what we do even when the bad days happen. Love conquers what money can’t.
Next is Confidence
You gotta know that you’re the best no matter who’s in the room. You have to believe it in the depths of your soul. You gotta look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself “I’m the shit, I’m the baddest doing this” lol (excuse my language) but there’s that passion
Without confidence you will find yourself being unsure and indecisive not standing on a strong foundation, being easily broken. Life has so many curve balls but when you know your purpose you can’t be turned. Confidence gives you that!
And I end with a strong focus on MAKING SURE THAT GOD IS INVOLVED, some are probably like but how?
Despite my language, I know God is real and without God’s presence in my life which is where my confidence and passion truly comes from, I would most likely still be in healthcare working and being miserable. God has given me so many signs and explanations as to why I should have got started on this a long time ago but I always ended up on another path.
God literally told me to STOP PLAYING AND GO FOR IT, so I’m here and doing this now!
