The Publishing Journey of Tara Richter Tara Richter’s expedition into the world of publishing is a remarkable tale of passion, ingenuity, and entrepreneurial spirit. From childhood scribbles to leading a blossoming publishing house, Tara’s path is an inspiration for writers and business minds alike.
Inspiration and Initial Steps
From the time she was a young child, Tara always had an affinity for writing. With crayons in hand and rubber paste, she crafted her own books, a nod to the future that awaited her. Her love for writing wasn’t just a pastime; it was the very essence of her being, a calling that she was determined to answer. The creative spark that ignited in Tara as a child continued to burn throughout her life, leading her to pursue a degree in graphic design and a career in the printing industry. It was during this time that she gained invaluable insights into the publishing world—a knowledge that would eventually lay the foundation for her future endeavors.
The Dating Jungle Series
Tara took her first significant step by penning books for her series titled, “The Dating Jungle.” While writing was a natural flair, publication was an entirely different ball game. However, Tara was no stranger to challenges. Her background in graphic design and print gave her the necessary tools to self-publish her books. This hands-on experience served not only to bring her personal work to the public eye but also stoked the flames of a new aspiration. Her book series ended up getting her media interviews all over the world. After all that exposure people in Tampa Bay then started coming to her asking if she could help them write their own books. Thus Richter Publishing was born.
A Chance Encounter with Opportunity
Tara’s publishing breakthrough came when she had the opportunity to ghostwrite a book with Kevin Harrington from the Shark Tank. The collaboration revealed Tara’s prowess in both writing and publishing. The success of this project catapulted her company into a higher orbit, marking a pivotal moment where Tara Richter’s publishing house went from a burgeoning idea to a robust enterprise. Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started my business with nothing. Literally no credit cards, no loans, nada, zip zilch. Many people think my parents help out. That is the farthest thing from the truth. May parents didn’t give me a dollar, they had no clue what I was doing and didn’t understand. My father who was in the real estate business was actually upset, he was grooming me to take over the family biz. So the fact that I, in his words, “Wanted to write and draw pretty little pictures,” upset him. We got into a huge fight and he didn’t talk to me for a year while I was writing and publishing my first book. Actually my mother was the one who told him I was doing this. I got my first TV interview when he finally reached out to me and asked how I was doing. I responded, “Well watch channel 10 news on Thursday at 11am and see Daytime TV to find out.” He saw my interview about my book and then called and that is how we reconciled. But no one ever gave me a dime to start my publishing house. I did it all with blood sweat and tears. I funded it with cash and I was broke. I only had $10,000 to my name at the time. I rented out rooms in my condo to pay bills. If I couldn’t afford something, I didn’t do it. I just believed in myself even when no one else did. I strayed signing clients and figuring things out as I went. I did everything myself. When I finally started making money then I would hire help. My company was doubling & tripling sales each year. I started off with nothing and by year 4 I was making $150,000 in gross profits.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Covid was the hardest of times for my company. I had 5 streams of revenue and went to zero over night. I thought I was going to have to sell my condo and sleep in my car. I didn’t get any PPP funds from the government even though I kept applying for them. No one was singing up to publish books and royalties from the books we already had were next to nothing. It was freaky times. I went from the highest grossing year prior in 2019 to almost having to shut down my company for good. I didn’t know what to do with myself. As a type A personality always on the go, I was going crazy. Honestly the only that made me survive it was the year prior I took time off to go live in Asia for 4 months. I was at that point close to burn out and need a retreat to destress and took the time to go travel with a group of strangers to volunteer at nonprofits and meditate with the Monks in Thailand. Living over there in Vietnam, Thailand, Japan & Singapore I had a spiritual awakening that I am not my company. My company is not me. We are two separate entities. Where before I lived for my company. After that experience I realized, Olive for me and my company is just part of my experience here on earth to help other people bring their stories to life. With those 4 months, I think the covid shutdown would have been mentally harder on me. Once I just accepted things as they were and I 100% shift my biz and how I approached it, I realized I don’t want to work 100 hours a week. I don’t want my work to stress me out. It gave me an entirely new outlook on life. I wrote a book about it called, “How to Run a Business During a Zombie Apocalypse” which won the 2021 Florida Authors and Publishers Association (FAPA) Book Award in the Business Category. And it also became an Amazon Best Seller.
