We were lucky to catch up with Tara Polley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Being a Realtor encompasses more than mere house sales; it involves fostering connections, having a profound understanding of the local community, grasping the regional lifestyle, and assisting individuals in achieving their dream of owning a piece of California. When the producers of American Dream Tv approached me to represent our community and spotlight the wine country region, I found the proposition both intriguing and nerve-wracking. On a personal level, I’m not at ease in front of the camera, tend to be introverted, and prefer to avoid excessive attention. However, at my core, I firmly believe that growth happens outside your comfort zone. So, I took a leap of faith and accepted the role despite my initial apprehensions.
At the outset, the relentless gaze of the camera felt like an intense spotlight penetrating deep into my being. The sudden surge of attention was overwhelming, and every word seemed to undergo meticulous scrutiny. Nevertheless, with each episode that we produce, I discover more about myself. In my role as the content creator and production manager for my segment, I’ve started enjoying the process of unleashing my creativity and getting acquainted with more locals. This endeavor has become a means to forge stronger connections by engaging with and interviewing members of our community. I take immense pride in showcasing to viewers across the country the extraordinary beauty and uniqueness of our region.
The unwavering support and encouragement I’ve received from those around me have been instrumental in this journey. Although it was a discomforting experience initially, I am genuinely grateful for taking the risk. Our show’s viewership has tripled since January, which makes it feel like a worthwhile endeavor and I’m now excited to create content that gets more exposure for my clients and community alike.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Leveraging over 23 years of experience as a successful business owner, my business background encompasses all aspects of residential real estate, subdivision development, housing crisis counseling, and luxury estates including Wineries as well as Bed & Breakfast properties. I specialize in Northern California Sonoma Wine Country, but I have also earned my license in North Carolina, focusing on the Raleigh Triangle and built a thriving real estate team there as well.
In addition to my extensive real estate experience, I now leverage media as a host of American Dream TV, a National Emmy-nominated and 5 x Telly Award winning lifestyle and real estate television show. My segment focuses on highlighting Sonoma County properties, lifestyle, local businesses and events. The American Dream is syndicated on CBS, Fox Cable, CNBC, the Travel Channel, and streaming on Apple Tv, Roku, Amazon Prime and Fire Video.
I’m known in my business for outstanding client service, consistent communication and responsiveness, creative high tech marketing techniques, personal touches, and as a skilled negotiator with my client’s best interests at heart. I believe strongly that my success is not rooted in any single transaction, but in my ability to establish long-term relationships that last beyond the time my clients and I spend together for their transaction.
As a long-time Sonoma County resident I’ve raised 4 children and developed deep roots in the community, including sports coaching and volunteering for animal based charities and serving the homeless population, as well as supporting veterans and first responders.
One of the things I’m proud of is that I am able to educate my clients throughout every step of the process armed with top-notch information and market insight, so they are able to make sound decisions that establish and maintain their personal wealth. My clients count on me to be honest, educated, and knowledgeable about the real estate industry so I work hard to continue my own education in my industry and I pride myself on the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I have represented celebrities and international luxury clients, as well as local friends and family of all ages and income brackets. First time homebuyers are often my favorite to work with, as they get so excited about buying and I feel so honored to be part of helping them establish home ownership.
I operate wiith a no-pressure, customer service attitude, and I’m committed to making the real estate experience not only memorable, but admirable. My ability to provide solid counsel is what keeps my clients coming back, and gives them the confidence to refer me to their friends and family.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During my 23-year career as a Realtor, I weathered all kinds of real estate market fluctuations, including the challenging 2008 foreclosure crisis. At that time, I was the primary provider for my young family, and it felt like our world was unraveling. The real estate market collapsed overnight, banks were closing during transactions, and the industry was in disarray. Fortunately, my commitment to service and helping others led me to take action. I saw members of my community losing their homes and immediately sought ways to assist.
I found my calling in housing crisis counseling, dedicating the next few years to coaching homeowners on loan modification options, short sales, and avoiding foreclosure. I teamed up with a Credit Counseling Non-Profit and became well-versed in the Making Home Affordable programs to help families preserve their homes. It was immensely fulfilling to make a meaningful difference in my community, and the gratitude I received in return warmed my heart. Many Realtors exited the industry during this tumultuous period, but by adapting and thriving in the challenging market, I positioned my business for rapid growth when the market eventually rebounded.
Looking back, I’m grateful for that time in my life because it reinforced the importance of prioritizing people and relationships above all else.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
By excelling in my work, leading with integrity, genuinely caring about the outcome, and consistently going the extra mile to meet my clients’ needs, the majority of my business now stems from referrals from past clients, friends, and family. I’ve noticed that the process of buying or selling a home can be inherently stressful, but often, people simply want to be seen, heard, acknowledged and understood during these times. I make it my priority to listen attentively, offer guidance, anticipate potential challenges, and provide support proactively, even before they realize they need it. Having 23 years as a local Realtor behind me provides a depth of experience that makes a difference in knowing what to anticipate and how to solve problems. I don’t believe in presenting problems without offering solutions. I also feel I have the connections and have built a network of professionals to refer to my clients that makes me a resource to them, even well after the transaction ends.
Ultimately, what truly matters is not the specific events during the process but how it’s managed. If I can leave my clients with a positive sense of being well cared for, I don’t need to chase or pay for leads. Clients appreciate this approach and readily share their positive experiences with others, leading to a seamless flow of business.
