We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tara LeGall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tara below.
Tara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am very happy as an artist. Of course there’s been hard times and I still have moments where I struggle, but I love being creative. There’s definitely been times where I’m like why didn’t I just get a “regular” job? Be a teacher, a doctor, or work my way up the corporate ladder at some company? Why couldn’t I just know exactly what I wanted to do at 10 and just continue down that path? But as I look back, as I’ve reflected over the years I understand that, that was never going to be who I am. Could I have gone another route and been successful – sure. But I wouldn’t have been happy. I wouldn’t have been living in my truth and I wouldn’t have had the amazing experiences that I’ve had. Being an artist, being creative is who I am.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an Artist first, but I have my hand in different areas. My main focus is painting, but I also design, illustrate, and do styling. Painting and Fashion really go hand in hand with me, one always inspiring my work for the other. I mainly do acrylic paintings, and have different subject matter. I tend to do portraiture and characters but also abstract. I also paint clothing and walls. In terms of Fashion, I am a stylist, fashion illustrator, and designer. I’ve designed/made my own pieces, including my cosplay outfits. I had a stint where I made and sold handbags, but soon I realized I didn’t fully love doing it, but now I just do it based on requests. And I’m most proud of not giving up honestly. I’ve done a few shows and worked with some really great brands, and I’m proud of that work, but truly proud of myself for not stopping.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Absolutely! If I would’ve known about all these artist’s programs and forums, the grant application sites, gallery lists, etc etc etc. There’s so much I had no idea about. Even just researching galleries opened my eyes to so many resources for artists. And also seeing that they are specific sites for the area you live in.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The never ending possibilities. To be able to just create and create and create is just an amazing feeling. There’s always another idea, another painting, another project. Being an artist, being a creative means having a whole world open to you that everyone gets to see or experience.
