We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tara Kasey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tara, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Determination and the desire to achieve great things is a major driving factor- not just for me- but all of us who want to be great or build something bigger than just ourselves. I don’t know everything about success, or quite what that means for me yet, but my greatest accomplishments have always costed me many failures. I think the main thing that defines us is our willingness to get back up and keep going.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Some people are shocked that I’ll be in law school next month. I always spoke about my interest in law however, even at the peak of my music career. I mentioned it at other interviews around that time. Usually, I expressed my interest in Environmental Law. But lately I’ve taken an interest in Personal Injury Law as well, as that is where the bulk of my interning experience lies. I am so looking forward to diving into the classroom and learning more about what I love to do!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Being myself on social media has really taken me a long way. When I was making music, I posted things like: my songwriting process, sneak peaks, behind the scenes on set of music video shoots, even the drama surrounding the experiences that the songs were based on. Followers love to get the inside scoop. They’ll even message you and let you know that they need more content. I think people want to feel like they are right there with you- that’s part of our social media experience. Now, when I’m at the firm, I try to remain active on social media by posting tips for other incoming 1Ls (first- year law students) like me. And since I’m still modeling this summer before class starts, I post that stuff too.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think somewhere in high school my light dullened a bit. That era of my life had me searching for a box to put myself in. I stopped aiming so high and I stopped being as versatile. Thankfully, my light wasn’t completely snuffed out. But like most of us at some point in our lives, I had to regain it back.
