We recently connected with Tara Joseph and have shared our conversation below.
Tara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When we founded Big Plan Holdings (BPH), a family enterprise with national and international investments in entertainment, music, arts and fashion, food and beverage and hospitality, cannabis and commercial real estate, athletics and multimedia, we did so committing to the hard work involved in each of these endeavors. We knew that we had to be willing to try and fail at things, to persevere through the challenges, and critically by surrounding ourselves with the right people throughout.
We are a truly family business and that family grows in scope and reach as we invest in people, yes with talent but as importantly, enthusiasm and the determination that we share – whether they are artists or entrepreneurs.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m the Co-Founder and CFO of Big Plan Holdings, Edgehill Music Publishing, the amulet society, and American Paint (an experiential hat design store and studio).
Before Josh and I started our family business, I brought an extensive background in fashion design, senior-level retail management, buying, and company branding to our portfolio.
Our investments are in 2023 also rooted in philanthropy – Everything we do under the Big Plan Holdings umbrella has an underlying foundation of giving back and working to see others succeed–asking ourselves, “Can we use our network to help?”
Constantly seeking new business opportunities, it’s a privilege to work alongside my husband Josh, our daughters Sydni and Sophie, and our entire growing business family on investments and acquisition endeavors.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We found ourselves when beginning to manage the diversified portfolio that is our business, constantly pivoting to meet various customer ‘asks’; however, this eagerness to please proved detrimental to business growth and consistency of our models.
It’s another case of prioritizing perseverance and staying on task; we are extremely grateful for the tremendous feedback we’ve received from our customer base in Nashville, the Midwest, and across the country!
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Truthfully the biggest thing for me and a tenet which holds true for our entire family is running our businesses as just that; a family, a team, without a hierarchy.
We are extremely cautious when we hear the word ‘boss’ in other businesses; the input of all our team members, no matter their ‘position’ within the company, is critical and has helped to shape Big Plan Holdings (BPH) and our philanthropic foundations to what they are today.
If you work with us, make no mistake – You are our partner and we’ve found that this kind of acknowledgement, the notion that everyone needs to be thanked for their respective contributions, goes a very long way. In everything we do, we do so with authenticity.
