We were lucky to catch up with Tara Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tara, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I took a risk by trying to break into a market not typically owned by women over 50. I set out to make a place for myself in the beauty and wellness niche on social media. I went from zero sales to being a high seller for many cosmetic products a place, not typically held by women, my age.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a woman who set out to lose weight as she approached 50. I lost 140 pounds and then my world kind of fell apart. My husband was diagnosed with a terrible disease and while I had a job that I was able to work at from home I knew my husband may not work for Long so I had to find a way to make more money And that’s when I started creating content on social media not just for money but also using make up as my therapy and the two together created an income that I will forever be grateful for
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media is difficult enough, but when you pivot from one niche to another, it could be downright impossible. So a lot of perseverance and consistency is what it took for me to be able to make my two worlds collide and still grow both an account and as a person
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
While social media is my side hustle I make just as much doing that as I do from my typical job. But I love both and I’m able to carve out time for both. It takes a lot of planning and also being in the right job but I’ve made it work Even if it means spending a weekend batching content so that I can concentrate on my typical job during the week.
