We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tara Hubbard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tara below.
Alright, Tara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I lead an environmental nonprofit, Take MAR (More Action for Regeneration) where we take an innovative approach to conservation. We believe the more humans connect with nature, the more they will fall in love with it and then develop pro-environmental behaviors. This is explained more succinctly by the famous Jacques Cousteau quote, “people protect what they love.” We work to regenerate the human-nature connection.
This is also something I practice with my business, Wonderfield Farm, where I’ve developed an agritourism destination. Typically, farms are closed off with fences and no trespassing signs, but we actively seek visitors and guests, as the tourism revenue not only helps fuel our revenue but is what fuels our mission. Our regenerative farm is a slice of Old Florida paradise, bordered by a 10,000 acre nature preserve and we seek to share this with the public so that more people understand how beautiful, and important, wild Florida is to preserve.
Tara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida, surrounded by nature and the water, which deeply shaped who I am today. My family owns *Hubbard’s Marina*, a business that’s been part of the local tourism industry for generations. Growing up in this environment, I developed a deep love for the outdoors, as well as a firsthand understanding of the tourism industry. Watching my father, a passionate entrepreneur, run the family business inspired me to explore my own path in life and gave me the courage to build something of my own.
That foundation led me to launch my first business in 2016, a wellness and travel brand designed to help people feel at home within themselves, wherever they are. The combination of my love for travel, nature, and personal well-being guided the creation of my first product, the *Asana Pillow*, a 2-in-1 travel yoga mat and neck pillow, and eventually led to designing wellness retreats around the world.
My journey, from growing up in the world of tourism to building my own business, is deeply rooted in a love for nature and a desire to create experiences that help others reconnect with themselves and the environment.
What I’m most proud of is my unwavering courage to pursue my passions, no matter the challenges I’ve faced along the way. Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, there have been moments where things didn’t go as planned—businesses failed, and projects didn’t pan out—but I never gave up. Every setback taught me something valuable, and I stayed committed to moving forward with new ideas and renewed energy.
One thing I would want potential clients, followers, and supporters to know is that everything I create is driven by a deeper purpose. Whether it’s a product, business, or nonprofit, I’m dedicated to building ventures that help make the world a better place. My focus is always on social entrepreneurship, where the work I do benefits not only people but also the planet. From wellness retreats to regenerative agriculture, every project is designed to create positive, meaningful impact.
Ultimately, what sets me apart is my commitment to staying true to my values, even when things get tough. I’m passionate about creating opportunities for others to reconnect with themselves, their communities, and the environment in ways that foster healing, growth, and sustainability.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting is the name of the game. The art of the pivot. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to pivot, but the flexibility, adaptability, and perseverance is what has gotten me to where I am today.
One of the most transformational pivots was when I was slated to host a yoga retreat in Greece in 2018. The property I had been planning to host with, suddenly cancelled due to seasonal issues. This was the moment – I either cancel, and take the loss, or I pivot and persevere. I chose the latter, and that was a HUGE decision. This pivot led me to desperately try to find a location, quite last minute, to host this yoga retreat. Around this time, my family had purchased some land north of the Tampa Bay area and I had a scrappy thought that it’d be possible to put on this retreat there. Well, that scrapped together, primitive nature retreat was the catalyst to me building what is now known as Wonderfield Farm and Retreat.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
In my first business, Om the Go, I invented a product called the Asana Pillow, a 2-in-1 travel yoga mat and neck pillow. I learned how to design, patent, prototype, manufacture, drop ship, and sell online a product within a year with the help of www.google.com. I was a traveling nomad at the time, and it shows in the fact that I received my product prototype in 5 different locations: St. Pete Florida, South Haven Michigan, Guayaquil Ecuador, and Rishikesh India. The final prototype was given to me in person by the manager of the sourcing company, who I had made friends with over the months of design. He was on vacation with his wife in Bali, Indonesia and I happened to also be in Bali the same dates – so that was one of my favorite client / partner dinners ever – on the beach in Bali given my final prototype of my first product!
