We were lucky to catch up with Tara Cunningham recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tara, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Twice Baked Clay’s mission is to create functional art that brings people joy. Just as our business organically began, we continue to be passionate and have fun with the process, which we truly believe is what and why others enjoy our pieces. We love creating pieces that express our mood in that moment, which seems to be relatable and appreciated by many.

Tara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Graduating from the University of Kansas many moons ago as an art major, I was able to experiment in all different art mediums. Eventually, my sister and myself, along with our families, found ourselves in Texas. As sisters, we are very close and love hanging out together and found ourselves taking a pottery class for fun. We loved it so much, we continued to make and make, long after the class was over. Eventually, we purchased a kiln and began gifting everyone in our friend circles with handmade pottery. It was then that we decided to start a business and Twice Baked Clay was born. The process of hand making clay into functional art is therapeutic for us. We love creating unique pieces, knowing that our clientele appreciates the craft as well as the quirky sense of humor that we share through our pottery.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that maintaining our mission and keeping the process fresh for ourselves as the makers of our product has helped build our reputation within our market. We have many repeat clients that continue to purchase and order custom pieces from us. I think our willing to work with others and our genuine love for the craft is evident through our whimsical take on pottery.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I think the idea of creating for the masses and having to possibly alter what we do to make others happy is something that we’ve overcome or realized we don’t have to change at all. If you love what you do, there will always be a niche for you.
