Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taquirah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Taquirah, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always known I wanted to perform. My journey really first started at a young age, I was performing at church and at school at least once a month . I would perform a lot at my elementary school Salem Christian Academy because of my praise dance teacher Ms. Sandi. She was a teacher who became like a mom for me and rooted for me to pursue being a performer.

Taquirah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m grateful that I had the chance to study ballet, and acting in high school. Learning how to tell a story has been the most important gift I have developed. I truly believe having a chance to develop those gifts really helped me stand out as a singer/ artist. It gave me a security with my confidence and affirmed that I don’t have to put limits on my artistry.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I recently had to learn a lesson of persevering through something I initially felt shame about. I recently had a shift in my band that I didn’t see coming originally but I’m proud of how I’ve been making time to heal and create. I recently got assaulted by my ex bandmate . It was actually terrifying to know that someone so close to me could want to physically harm me but it has made me stronger. I’ve spent a lot of time crying, writing and dancing. I feel like going through feeling unsafe in my body encouraged me to move more and to embrace my uncomfortable moments. Even though I’m moving now I had a lot of days were I just sat in bed just trying to process things and understand but ultimately I will never understand. I recently felt inspired by some of the gestures I was doing and decided to shoot a video with my good friend Charlie to I SEE. This video showcases moving through feeling uncomfortable and being supported through out that process. I’m grateful I had women like Diana Eneh, TUTU, and Aniya to help me fight through that process . I think persevering becomes easy when you have people around you rooting you. I have days where I’m completely anti social and I have days where I’m the life of the party. I’ve been learning to embrace it and not control it.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I feel like my ultimate goal is connect with people and to be free. Creating is my way of healing myself. I feel like I’m constantly going through something or evolving . Music is my safe space where I can journal my emotions. It’s where I can say things with no judgement. I feel like I’m in a stage where I feel free and I don’t give a fuck and it feels exciting to finally be here. I just want other people to feel safe to be the same. I guess my goal would be for other people to feel safe and free.
