We recently connected with Tanysha Russell and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanysha, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?

It all stated with a wild concept that I could walk away from my very secure career. My daughter was 2 at the time and taking her to daycare took a toll on both me and her. I couldn’t take leaving her with complete strangers. I also rekindled my love for makeup at the time, So I would sit at my desk and paint my face to keep my mind off of things. That’s when this wild concept came to pass….what if I could walk away from this career and actually do what I love? What if I could do makeup? I would soon put things into perspective and start taking clients. After realizing my schedule was getting filled, I decided to invest in the beauty world. I went back to school and received my Esthetician’s License. I created my LLC and started my very first business, Flawless Beauty Studios LLC. I definitely went into things blind, but as time went on I adjusted to the industry and fine tuned my personal-work life schedule. 3 years later and I am grateful for maintaining in this ever changing field. I aspire to help lift those who too have dreams beyond the work desk.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

I got into the beauty industry shortly after high school. Since then I’ve been sharpening my craft and introducing new things to my business. Thanks to the great amount of support I also was able to get practice on the latest makeup techniques. With this practice II now offer things like Full face Makeup, Facials, brow enhancements and lash extensions. I love the fact that I can be the bridge for my clients in helping apply makeup. Ultimately I feel that the rapport I’ve built with my clients is what sets me apart from most. I’m most proud of the lasting relationships I’ve gained and the warm smiles I see after each makeup session. What I mostly want my future clients and future clients to know is that I have a natural passion for makeup but lifting each and everyone up when they leave my chair is my true calling. Flawless Beauty studios was definitely made with you in mind, One face at a time! 😊

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

When COVID hit I thought that was the end of my business. How could I do makeup in the middle of a pandemic? Would I survive? How long? Eventually I stopped wondering if and I begin to pray over it. After that I decided to keep posting and push through the slow business. To my surprise, once we were able to open shop, people were booking like crazy. I was so thankful and grateful for the momentum I maintained because people saw I was still there!

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

I was able to fund my business by one simple tip. RESEARCH! I came across YouTube videos that introduced me to business credit and tax write offs. I received a break when a company by the name of Small Business Association offered me a grant. With this grant I was able to expand.
