We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tanysha Carroll a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanysha, thanks for joining us today. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
I love family. I love my family and those who I have chosen as family. When it comes to business organization, roles/responsibilities are important to put into place. Determining what people do well and how those strengths can be incorporated is essential. Respect and consistency are 2 of the most important parts of being in business with family. Respect each persons voice role they play in making things happen. Be consistent in showing up, fulfilling the tasks/roles, and contributing. Working together means you also identify when to step up or step in and when to step back and allow someone else to advance in an area. Connecting with people, other businesses who can give wisdom and insight as you progress was helpful to me.
The ability to find agreement, recognizing growth and change in the contributors as well as the brand created difficult times for us. We had plenty of arguments about , what next, what is working, and which voices are most valid. A family could easily begin to carry what has happened in a business meeting into everyday life especially if multiple members of the family are involved and children are involved. Not setting boundaries at the onset caused frustration for everyone and even caused us to stop and start the business. Even though you may make many decisions and set boundaries in advance there are still times where pause and reflection is needed because the relationship is what is most important.
When my family had an apparel line my children were the heart of the business. It was something everyone wanted to build together and their ideas and work ethic were important to me. Finding the line between parenting and business partner was a challenge. Of course you never stop parenting, but I needed to discover how to guide more than instruct; it was not easy and I did not always excel with it. Despite that, I still would not trade it for the world. Being able to discover the creativity within each person, pushing one another to experience new things, and learning more about ourselves and our family was impactful and unforgettable.
Every family is different and should gauge their ability to work together however I believe humility is key. If you feel as though you have all the answers, you do not leave room for growth and expansion. No one has all the answers., but I could surely find the people that do have the answers I don’t have. My desire to work with my family is because I know how amazing they are and what God has said about their future. I know it is great! I also know that we are better and stronger together. I am happy to submit my expertise to others in my family in order to build something great and I believe anyone who is willing to do that can do the same.
Tanysha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Tanysha W. Carroll. I am an author, publisher, administrative professional and I own Carroll MT Publishing. I have been assisting men and women for over 5 years to write and publish their own books, audio record books, and assist them with daily business support. It is an honor to encourage people to write and especially to see that they can not only write but also have success with writing.
I have been an administrative professional for 15 years and when Covid-19 sent everyone home, I saw the opportunity to assist virtually. In the midst of that I also took a publishing class through TDR Brands international after self publishing my first book “Chosen to Rise: How to Stay True To Your Assignment When Your Flesh Wants To Quit.” This lit a fire in me and I connected with several people who desired to write and publish their own books.
I am a boutique publishing company meaning I have specific services related to publishing and include the actual publishing, but I do not provide marketing/distribution. I do provide, coaching, editing, formatting, copyrighting from the publishing perspective. In relations to Administration, I provide scheduling, correspondence support, note taking, limited event planning.
It is a joy to help people bring their projects to fruition. I take the stress out of a persons willingness to share their story or share their knowledge. I take on what is important to you and help create systems which will simplify what you desire to do. I come into every opportunity ready to serve and support the vision. I treat your vision as if it is my own and provide not only what is requested, but also suggestions about what is next.
I am proud that people are willing to recommend me. I am able to complete the work with excellence and provide needed services to my clients. CarrollMT Publishing offers kindness, humility, and expertise. I am always ready to take your vision to the next level. I am also willing to learn more in the event you need something with which I am not as familiar. Growing and improving is always at the forefront of my mind and business
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source for new clients for me has been existing clients. Those who work with me have found my work to be worthwhile, valuable, and recommendable. I have found that my work and attentiveness to clients helps to build confidence and provides the opportunity for people to tell others how i could also be of service to them. many of those who have been recommended, are strangers to me and we are able to build a great working relationship as we move forward with projects and needs.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I have had to unlearn is to maintain proper boundaries with clients. As a loving, caring, people oriented person and business, I can easily begin to learn about a person and become so connected that my attention to a job is minimized. I have had a long-term client who I became close to because it helped me to provide the necessary service, when speaking for her. Early on, it caused me to miss important details which impacted the bottom line. I began to put systems in place, which would allow me to still stay connected to the client but also ensure that nothing is lost in the process. It was also important that when a problem would arise, I address it head on for the purpose of resolution. As a person who cares about accountability, it was easy to see my need to put boundaries and systems in place which suit both myself and the client.
