We were lucky to catch up with Tanya Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tanya , appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success for me is living a life of passion, something I can’t wait to wake up and experience every single day. Success is having a happy, healthy marriage and happy, kind children. Success is making a difference in the world with the work that you put out daily. This can be to one or to many – it really doesn’t matter, as long I am leaving a legacy of impact and inspiring others to do big things with their lives.
I truly believe that everyone should have their own definition of success. Everyone’s journey to their success looks different. Many people think that money and the things equals success, yet so many, experience lack of joy once they have the money and the things. Success isn’t some thing – it’s a feeling. It’s the feeling of pure joy, daily!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2020 I started an online community and a podcast called Ladies Kickin’ Ass. The purpose of this was to serve the women who I know I used to be. A woman being thrust into the home service industry, without a lot of instruction and little know how of what the heck I was doing. I created a community where women working in predominately male-populated and managed businesses, could come to ask for help, get support and learn that personal development will get them to levels of their life that they didn’t know existed.
The podcast interviews amazing women (and a couple men) that help mentor women working in the service industry. Women who want to learn and do more. Ladies who want to grow and kick ass daily without being unapologetic for being bold and determined.
One of my greatest accomplishment has been getting stepping out of fear and really celebrating who I am and what I have to offer to a pretty underserved population. Many times as women, we try to shrink ourselves to fit into the “Norm”. We think we are “too much” we think we have to look a certain way, act a certain way, do certain work, have perfect kids and relationships and life! It’s total BS!
I have taken great pride this year in becoming authentically myself, unapologetically! I have realized more than ever, that my calling is to serve these women, just like me, that think they don’t have a place at the table! We do have a place and it’s a very important one! We are teaching other women to be their authentic selves. We are teaching our daughters a new normal where women support each other, instead of tearing each other down. We are changing what the service industry looks like and showing our kids that there is massive opportunity where good ole hard work is willing to be done.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Oh! I love this question. One thing I believe I need to throw out there right now is this… followers do not make you money! My philosophy on social media is not to gain thousands of useless followers. What I use social media for is to tell the real, raw story of who I am as a business owner, who I serve, what I do in the community, who I am as a mom, and what I do to help women with my community. I have lots of people who ask to be in our membership community on Facebook – but if they are not the people that I am serving, it does no good to have them in the group.
So many people what the instant approval of lots of followers – so you have decide upfront what you want to use the platform for: peeping toms or supportive cheerleaders! I want the fewer cheerleaders all day long.
Also, side note! Please put out positive content! Lets inspire others to do amazing things.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
One of my favorite books last year was The Power of One More by Ed Mylett. Just the phrase “Power of one more” is such an incredible way to thing. Imagine what we could accomplish if we use that phrase for good and we did “just one more” of everything. Just do one more rep at the gym. Just give one more complement today to someone on your team. Just give one more hour of time to your spouse this week. Just read one more story to your kids at bedtime. Just give one more hug to a friend that needs it. Send just one more text message to someone that has been on your mind. It doesn’t take much more effort, but if we could embrace that phrase and use it everywhere – wow! What an impact!
