We were lucky to catch up with Tanya Barrera recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tanya, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been super into art + music and knew that I wanted to do something creative with my life. This is going to sound crazy, but the reason I started pursuing this path was because I got a strong spiritual calling in 2018 telling me that I was meant to take this DJ/Music Production path with the end goal of healing others. I remember discovering Lane 8 and listening to his albums “Little by Little” and “Rise”. I was going through one of the hardest times of my life and I remember listening to the tracks on those 2 albums and it giving me so much hope, joy, and a will to keep living. After having that strong calling, I decided I wanted to make other people feel the same way Daniel made me feel. So I started experimenting on FL Studio (the first DAW I ever used) and would make an effort to befriend likeminded individuals. I quickly realized that if I wanted to achieve the end goal of healing others, I would have to make music my career so that I could reach as many people as possible.
Never in a million years would I have guessed that this would be the path I’d take. Like SERIOUSLY, If you would have met me back then, I wouldn’t’ve even been able to talk to you because I was SOOO introverted! But I wouldn’t have it any other way and am so so grateful for this journey!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi I’m Tanya! My DJ/Producer name is TASBA and my only goal with this project is to help heal others through the power of music. I specialize in Organic/Deep/Melodic house music similar to the styles of Anjunadeep and All Day I Dream. I also curate my own events called “Dream House” where I incorporate mindfulness/mental health with music and connecting with others on the dance floor.
A couple of accomplishments I am most proud of is getting my track “Close Your Eyes (Love Your Mind)” played on Nora En Pure’s “Purified” radio show and having the honor to play direct support for one of my favorite artists/inspiration, Jody Wisternoff.
It’s been an incredible experience to align and cross paths with artists I have looked up to for years!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Show more support to local/upcoming artists! I have noticed some people only want to go to the big events and don’t even bat an eye to locals. All of your favorite artists started out somewhere. If there is someone that you enjoy listening to, go to their shows, buy/stream their music, follow or comment on their posts. All of this helps us tremendously, show us some love! It is fuel to keep us going.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am a dreamer at heart and spend a lot of time in my head rather than the real world. Sometimes it feels like a curse, so much goes on in my brain that I have a hard time translating it out. But one thing that helps me a lot is to create. Music gives me a safe space to let my imagination run wild. Having people resonate with what I put out into the world, whether its to escape and dance a little or help them get through a hard time, has been one the most rewarding experiences of why I do what I do.
