Tanya and Xezavier, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.

One thing I learned early on is that everything in life involves risk. The key is knowing when to walk away. When I started Beyond Flavor, I knew it was going to be a gamble, especially since I quit my $70,000-a-year job to run my business full-time. Being new to the San Antonio area added to the challenge, as I had no support network if my venture failed. Additionally, I had merely $100 in my savings account. I was tired of working in healthcare at a job that didn’t care about me, only about what they could get out of me. In a 9-to-5 job, you’re replaceable when you’re no longer needed. Faith and prayer helped me step out in faith, and Beyond Flavor became more than just a vision—it became a reality. If you’re truly serious and passionate about something, it’s a risk worth taking.

Let me reintroduce Beyond Flavor, a catering company run by myself, Tanya, and Xezavier. We operate locally with a sit-down location at 3363 East Commerce, San Antonio, 78220. We moved from Temple, Texas to San Antonio in 2018 and launched Beyond Flavor in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, we have served thousands of clients, including companies like Jacobs, the African American Chamber, Security Services, Essence Preparatory, and more. We’ve also had the pleasure of serving at the Sneaker Ball SA for the past few years.

What keeps us motivated is the joy of seeing our clients satisfied with good food. We offer a wide variety of dishes, tailored to whatever the client requests. Our services include corporate lunches, brunches, dinners for two, in-home catering, drop-offs, and even out-of-town events. What sets us apart is our commitment to making our clients happy. If things aren’t going well, you have the flexibility to pause or stop it. However, the downside is that it requires effort to advertise and attract clients.

Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?

Owning any business requires money, and sometimes the finances just don’t add up. This often necessitates finding supplemental income. It’s wise to have a backup plan, such as starting another business, doing rideshare, delivering groceries or food, or delivering packages. Always have a strategy to ensure your finances balance out.
