Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tanner Brusnighan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tanner, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear stories from your time in school/training/etc.
Chiropractic school was an incredible experience with lots of lessons learned academically, but also life lessons. I love to describe the experience of attaining knowledge in that institution as “drinking from a firehouse.” There was so much to learn, understand, and apply in just a few years. One of the unintentional things that I learned from that experience was how to be critical of information. We live in a modern world of the internet where anyone can put information that may be biased, skewed, or just plain false. My experience with going through a rigorous program ended with me learning to be a little skeptical of what information I am hearing, not to judge or dismiss, but to say to myself “I am going to look into that further at a later time.” That way when the time comes to recall information that may be pertinent to a patient, I can know that I have done my due diligence and the information that I am passing on I know is correct, and backed by as much evidence as I can provide.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up playing a lot of sports as a kid. At some point in high school I really injured myself playing tennis and I never felt like I fully recovered from that injury for a few years. After some ups and downs, I was encouraged to try a chiropractor and my life was changed for the better! I immediately went back to my college counselor and asked what does it take to pursue the path to become a chiropractor and now here I am! I continue to be surrounded by athletics whenever I can and help active individuals and athletes of all levels get out of pain and stay out of pain! I emphasize longer treatment visits with my patients so that I can be fully present and know that I am getting to the root cause of the pain and treating it with all of the tools in my arsenal. I make it a point to make sure that my patients feel, safe, confident, and empowered by not only the treatments performed but also if their future healthcare!
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely I would. From a pretty young age I feel like I enjoyed figuring out things worked by taking them apart and putting them back together. That curiosity paired with my love of being in service to other people and my dexterity, this is the perfect profession for me.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
One of the things people may not know about my profession is that we go through so much academically to prepare us to be doctors, and most opportunities in the chiropractic realm are at the small business level. So unless you are naturally business minded, it can be a real uphill battle to create a successful business without that being a taught skill set.
