We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tanja Schroeder a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tanja, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you manage your own social media?
I manage the social media for my company. It’s a lot of work! I can see how that is a full-time job. I’d love to bring someone on board to take it over, but until then, I’m a team of one.
Social media is an opportunity to express my mission and intention. It feels like it’s evolving, but as long as I am creative and vulnerable, I’ll eventually find the right strategy.
Finding exposure amidst a seemingly obscure algorithm has felt daunting. I have to remind myself that the views, likes, or follows, do not define my business or the impact I can make.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The seeds for Link were planted about 5-6 years ago! I didn’t realize it then, but looking back this has been unfolding slowly.
When I finished my grad school program, I was burned out. Everything was focused on work, career growth, and school. Ever since I began to explore different outlets seeking recovery, it has taken a while though. First I job-hopped thinking I’d find a better balance with the next job. Finally, I reached a point where I realized I had to make a change in my daily habits and lifestyle.
When I went through a breathwork and mindset coaching certificate, I realized breathwork is missing from work environments. Most of us are open to integrating self-care into our lives, but we wait until the end of the day, or even the weekend (if we manage to fit it in). Link promotes integrating moments of self-care into the workday. It invites finding that breath-to-movement flow we experience in a yoga class, the focus we can find in our breath, and the stillness we learn from while meditating.
We have these tools within us to find peace, invite creativity, and feel joy- yet we brush it off. We wait until later. Link challenges that mindset by inviting a healthy disruption into the hustle culture. We think we don’t have time to pause in the middle of the day, but that a pause can help us recenter and focus, giving us more time back. Not to mention it’s just a healthier way to live when we manage our stress in the moment, instead of letting it build up.
Burnout is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. Link is an invitation to try something different. Workplaces face similar challenges, across all types of orgs. Link is an outside-of-the-box response to culture change. The most popular offerings are customized meditations and breathwork sessions, 1-1 breathwork coaching, and yoga. Lately, I have been invited to staff retreats to break up a long day with mindful moments.
Link comes to you at work, your retreat, or even virtually!
I offer a free monthly virtual session on the first Monday of the month! Anyone can register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/community-breath-break-free-tickets-946657547207
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve had to learn to take a pause myself! Link is built by someone who didn’t know when to rest, for those who need a reminder to take a rest.
We know how to work hard, we know how to achieve, we know what it takes to get recognized… but we don’t know how to slow down, listen to our bodies, and allow ourselves to do nothing.
I’ve had to re-learn this, even over the last year that I have worked on building Link and the products. The idea that we have to be busy to achieve, is very deeply ingrained and a hard habit to overcome.
My biggest lesson is that rest is productive.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Former colleagues and classmates- I am so grateful for them. I shared the idea of Link before even having a website or products clearly defined and received a few invitations to try something out at their current jobs. It provided me with a window to see that there was an opportunity for this out there and gave me the courage to keep building it.
