We recently connected with Tanishia Bolton and have shared our conversation below.
Tanishia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
Corporate America forgets that they had to come from somewhere in order to get to where they are, seems like they put certain people in place to handle the day to day that have little to no compassion for the works or “minions” as some would call them. Most bosses/higher ups only care about filling seats and getting things done more than they care about the person who’s doing it well being. Without proper understanding of what the workers deal with on the regular and negating that it plays a huge psychological part on the workers they expect them to still perform top tier. While I get the saying “leave home where it’s at when you come to work” it’s hard to leave work where it’s at when you get home because you now carry the weight of defeat and sadness due with you because “the consumer is always right even when some one else is at fault”. These notions are completely wrong and will mentally destroy a person especially when your job/lively hood is in jeopardy if you speak against the verbal abuse of the customer or respond in a manner that isn’t almost robotic. Corporate world all in all forgets that their workers deserve the same respect they expect them to forward to their clientele. They also have no regard when an employee is having a off day and need to take some time for wellness it’s said that if it’s not requested in a certain amount of time it’s not approvable but yet their supervisors can take spare of the moment days off due to family being in town, just needing a day to recover, etc etc. I can def go on and on about this topic as I have experienced a lot of these injustices first hand as a full time employee in the corporate world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a people loving, outgoing, welcoming person but I am also introverted in a sense. My motivation being starting my crafting business was to bring people and families back to the table on game nights with something that could be a ice breaker to starting conversation. I really wanted to create something that would be unique to the family that can be passed down for generations and en-capsule something that the family can cherish for many years. Also crafting has been a great way to relieve some of my own worries, I find myself getting lost once I start a project I can be in my craft space for hours just creating random pieces as well. What I believe sets me apart from others is I create my pieces upon order so nothing is cookie cutter it’s designed with my client in mind and some times they give me free reign to surprise them with my own creativity, that’s when I try my best to research what they could possibly like and put my heart into each set I do individually. Unlike many crafters, I “share the wealth” so if there’s something I know I can do but there’s a crafter who specializes in that craft I refer the work out, in my words “there’s enough work out here for us all to succeed”. I am most proud of the fact that I can leave something behind for my nephews and nieces if they decide to be crafters, I am excited to pass the hustlers mentality to them and see what they decide to do with it in the future.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
TO put together the initial capitol I did uber eats, instacart, and grub hub. Financially I didn’t make enough to support my home and start a crafting business so I thought the next best option would be to get out there and make it the best way I could without pulling from bill money or getting any loans
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My best source so far for clientele would be when I did a new interview, that kinda pushed my business in a positive directions and I kept up with it via social media
