Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanisha Woods.
Hi Tanisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey into the realm of legislative policy and human resources upon completion of my first degree in Political Science. I was involved in the student government and participated in the intercollegiate legislature. Initially I found it extremely provocative to realize that the system of democracy has a time limit and it still remains the same tool by which the United States finds useful to compromise on actions with, for, and by the people. After working in a career field that I didn’t choose, it chose me; social work. I understand more completely the element of human struggle, relationship dissonance, and working with a demographic that often times find themselves in a constant wheel of struggle and stereotyped. While working in this industry, I sought a 2nd masters degree in Human Resources Management, which gave me complete elevation. The combination of Political Science and HR leadership and development align perfectly. I use my skillset to enhance political aspirants and influence policy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would not say it’s been a smooth road but a natural progression. I believe like Frederick Douglass that without some struggle there is no progress. If one appreciates the lessons within the struggle the likelihood of successful progress. My challenge has been accepting the actions of others. Often times folk will state their desire to become a change maker, yet their actions do not reflect such. Realizing I am an encouraging leader that enjoys helping others to realize their potential. My lessons have helped me to know when to place a period where there was once a comma or even a semicolon. Ultmately, learning that healthy boundaries are essential for protecting my peace.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the Congressional Legislative Liaison for the Air Force Sustainment Center. Essentially, I work in the Public Affairs department and my duties include leading congressional visits, cultivating relationships with congressional members, staff, state, local, and community leaders. My position is key to providing legislative overview to Directors and ensuring that communication is maintained. I am known for my political savvy, Legislative knowledge, and influence within the community. The capacity to bring people together, engage, and build leaders. I have the pleasure of writing a weekly column in the Oklahoma City Herald.
I am proud of every step I make on this life journey as a Black woman who leads. I am a proud mother of one son and an aunt to 3 amazing humans. I am an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
I am set a part as Tanisha Woods, God led, and spiritually in tune. Always ready to do the work I am created to do. I have a relentless attitude of commitment and I see things through until the end. These characteristics keep me grounded in personal and professional relationships and adds a bit of favor, which keeps me miles a part from most.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I have been out of the country once and I plan to take more time to explore states I’ve not visited and to travel more internationally.
