Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tanisha Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tanisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Mission: “Bringing Women together on one accord to embody their serenity through the love of Christ.”
I was a teenage mother at the age of 17, a college drop out with a 4.0 gpa. While going back home to my first born, I birth two more children within a 3 year span. At the age of 21, I had 3 children, no degree, and not sure where life would take me. All I knew was how to be a mother. I wasn’t sure if I were doing it well however; I was determined to raise intellectual and respectful black men with their Father. During this time in my life, I experienced multiple encounters with anxiety and depression. Seeking counseling to discover the underlying causes of my issues was extremely helpful for my healing journey.
Today 32 years later, along with their father we accomplished the goal of raising our children in a two parent home with minimal injuries to our egos.
After raising my sons, I began to question what I liked. After pondering on this for some time, I couldn’t answer the question, it was then I knew there was a problem. My life was centered around being a mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend that I had no idea what made me who I was.
I returned to college to successfully attain my degree in my early to mid 30’s. When school didn’t didn’t fulfill the void, I continually tried to find my way and my purpose.
It wasn’t until a dear friend of mine passed away suddenly from a heart attack that I unknowingly began to walk into my purpose. My dear friend who is my Sista recognized during this devastation, I was spiraling into a dark place again and she invited me to a Women’s retreat.
While at the retreat, I was genuinely prayed for, loved on and handled with such kindness that’s when I began the healing process of my unspoken grief. After that experience, I vowed that “One day I’m going to come back to this exact place and do the same for other Women who are hurting.”
It is my responsibility to bring women of all ethnicities together to experience peace from their everyday demands of being a wife, mother, sister, daughter, counselor, homemaker, etc. I unapologetically allow women to focus on themselves unselfishly while working on the total body, mind, spirit and financial areas of their lives. We as women wear many hats, oftentimes burning the candle at both ends and are left with guilt when saying “No” to our families and friends, neglecting to care for ourselves, mentally, physically and emotionally.
My mission is to give women permission to stop and smell the roses. To take time for themselves while creating healthy boundaries, paying attention to their bodies signals and simplifying the stress of household financial demands.
I encourage this with Life coaching “self improvement and personal finances” as well as offering an annual retreat called Girlz Talk. While at the The Girlz Talk retreat, we open our hearts to remove our personal issues and replenish our spirits to go back into the duties of Spouse, Motherhood, Corporate leader, etc. Women are known as the nurturers and givers of life yet we so often forget to do so for ourselves.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an African American woman, who pride myself on being the person I needed as a young lady. I try my best to make everyone I encounter feel free to be themselves. I encourage others to be ok with celebrating themselves and be ok to say I’m not ok. I also have a way of being a “mother” when situations are presented by speaking in truth yet leading with Love.
This is what I strive to do while building my Life coaching and the Girlz Talk retreat brand. We want to genuinely love on Women especially if they aren’t receiving the love from others or giving it back to themselves. The goal is to allow each woman to acknowledge who she is and how important she is to her family, friends and colleagues without losing herself in the process.
The Life coaching I offer is tailored around self improvement by self evaluating, creating boundaries, making goals, and reviewing financial goals. These topics are situations/
many mothers or women encounter daily. As women, life situations may create a level of frustration. Having these tools in their tool belt will help women implement all that they have learned.
I also have a journal line to assist women with Praying, Goal-Setting, Self-Care and Basic Budgeting.
I also have a journal line available to assist women, titled “Girl Pray”, “Girl set your Goals”, “Girl, find your power”, and “Girl get yo bag.” The journals can be found on Amazon under Testimonial Ink LLC/ Tanisha Scott.
The message I want women to walk away with is not everyone has it all together. Also, knowing that transparency and collaboration are useful tools to help us build where we fall short. We can also connect with each other and help.
I am most proud that even when life gives me devastations, I don’t quit because there are women who are waiting for me to show up.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yes. Feb 8, 2023, I lost my Mother to ovarian cancer. Last year was her very first time seeing my gift to help, serve and heal other women while attending my retreat. After her passing, I wanted to cancel everything! My life had been paused since her diagnosis in November of 2022. I almost slipped back into depression again; However, while caring for her, she told me, “Tanisha keep doing what you’re doing to help heal others.” Therefore, the spirit inside of me will not quit. I had to constantly remind myself that I couldn’t give up and throw in the towel, why? Because, there are other women who need me. They need to know that in-spite of all I have endured the last 6 months, they are still important to me and I value and believe in their healing. On April 28-30, 2023, I will have the 5th Annual Girlz Talk Women’s retreat serving over 30 Women.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
