We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tanisha Naughton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tanisha below.
Tanisha, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My story behind my mission is my mom. I have always been health conscious and heavily involved with living a healthy lifestyle and working out. My mother was diagnosed with being diabetic and it changed my outlook on life because I saw how much my mother was suffering. She experienced symptoms such as dizziness & temporary loss of vision. She was on a few medications prescribed via her doctor. I decided to halt my my mother from all medications after doing research on holistic healers that found a solution to cure diabetes naturally as I felt the medications were not helping her. I wanted to help my mother so she can live a healthier and longer lifestyle. I changed her to diet to more of a vegan lifestyle and began making her burdock root tea daily. A littler over a year later her doctor told her she was pre-diabetic after me changing her diet to mainly fruits & vegetables & incorporating burdock root tea.
Once I realized the herbs/vegan lifestyle helped my mother I decided that I wanted to help others as well but I also wanted to spread knowledge to others! We can heal our bodies with herbs holistically and eating more whole foods.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m Tanisha a former Division 2 collegiate basketball player and former personal trainer. I was always in the wellness industry as I am a huge athletic person. I got into the coaching industry after my mom was diagnosed with diabetes and I wanted to help her naturally. My mom was my first client, I learned about natural remedies and decided to get certified as a wellness coach after she became pre-diabetic. I now offer 1 on 1 coaching to women of color helping them transition to become plant based while having fun. I also, educate them about how to incorporate herbs in their life.
What set’s me apart from others is my story. I had to go through the turmoil of my mom being sick and see her suffering. I did not think I would be in the coaching space but when I saw how plant based lifestyle helped my mom, I knew this was my calling. Food is our medicine, what we eat either fuels us or depletes us. I myself, was able to lose 30 pounds since transitioning to vegan lifestyle. I am a living testament of this lifestyle and how much positive impact it has had on my life.
I show women of color how they can take back their health. Diabetes and high cholesterol affect women of color a lot, amongst other diseases. If all I have to do is show someone how to eat cleaner, lower their stress to live a better healthier lifestyle why wouldn’t I do it? We need more women to choose themselves in regards to their wellness.
I want my potential clients to know you are getting an accountability coach with me. I am going to support you, hold space for you and guide you on a beautiful journey to loving your body through your food choices. I focus on mindset while transitioning my clients to become plant based. We work on daily habits such as, working out and meditation because these practices help set your mind for success when making a lifestyle change. Becoming plant based is not a diet, it is a lifestyle that will become apart of you.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started my business back in 2018 it was actually a tea business believe it or not. The burdock root tea that helped my mom with her diabetes I decided I wanted to make it and sell it. I was personal trainer and doing some light coaching during this time. I quickly learned that while I enjoyed making the products, people needed more from me and making big batches of tea did become tiring.
One thing I learned, you have to enjoy what you do as a business owner. I pivoted to making air fresheners that were non toxic. Being plant based you start wanting to have natural products that are great for you and the environment. My friends say I am the “chemist” I am always making something whether it be a product or amazing smoothies. I enjoyed this a lot and went to different vendor events selling my product and also on my online store. My dad and I actually did it together. I still sell air fresheners to this day but people kept telling me how coaching would be amazing with all of my knowledge and I was technically coaching people all the time during my personal training or when someone wanted to make a lifestyle change.
I finally decided to go all in with coaching and helping people become plant based. I honestly think the tea and air freshener businesses were the steps I had to take to get here. It showed me how driven I was and how passionate I am on people living a healthier life. Those pivots have made me stronger and allowed me to get real clear on my life’s purpose. I am meant to serve people and help them come back to themselves through plant based lifestyle.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There are so many books that have impacted my entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy. I will say mindset is truly everything when running a business so books and podcasts have been a way I frame my mindset to be stronger and gain more knowledge about myself.
The books I recommend are The artist way by Julia Cameron. If you are ever stuck about your creative gifts this is a great read.
