We recently connected with Tanisha Massenberg and have shared our conversation below.
Tanisha , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
When it comes to establishing your own firm/practice, I would say more than anything is you have to be a doer. Research and plan, but then get to work. Don’t try to research and learn everything. And know that you can’t plan everything. But as long as you keep doing, you’ll build what you desire. Make it yours! Remember everything you learned from every previous job that was good. Then add to it with your special and unique touches. There will be a lot of fear and worry and anxiety it the beginning because nobody truly knows what they are doing. So don’t fret and you have to mentally endure that. Keep making decisions that you feel honor your why? Build your brand on why you are your own firm. Why do people need YOU! Good luck and God bless! Pray through the process. Believe it’s a million dollar business and operate like it’s that.
Tanisha , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, I’m Tanisha and I’ve been a licensed massage therapist for almost 6 years and I love it. I truly believe it’s one of the gifts God has anointed me with to bless others. I’m really good at it! I started a mobile massage business in 2020 and it’s taken off since. I just specialize in pure relaxation and therapeutic massage. Nothing too fancy, nothing too special. But I’ve been told at least 100 times that I’ve given people the best massage they ever had. It makes me proud to know I’ve accomplished something that I’m really good at. Extremely talented at. Highly sought after about. Referred and rebooked time and time again. And if it couldn’t get any better, I’m helping, blessing and serving others. I feel impactful and purposeful on this Earth which also makes me feel fulfilled. It’s also put me in position to work for myself for over a year. It’s a great feeling to be able to produce money from my skills and not a job. I’m currently working on scaling my businesses to making $10k a month but passively. I love doing service work but I’m ready to transition into passive income. I’ve put in years of work and I’m still willing to do work, but not so much on the front lines. So I love the season I’m in business wise. I’m turning it up a notch, so that I can make more money AND take more vacations. I also plan to help others reach the same goal after I achieve it for myself.
I’m the biggest advocate for mental, emotional and spiritual health. I want everyone to be blessed and covered and to enjoy the beauty this crazy life has to offer! I want people to be well, feel well and live well. So I’m passionate about serving others and doing anything in my power to help them feel better.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Oddly enough I would encourage everyone to find Facebook groups directly related to your niche market.
For example, I’m a licensed massage therapist in Dallas that does mobile massage.
I’m in 3 different massage Facebook groups. Two for mobile massage therapists. And one for Dallas massage therapists.
There is so much networking power and tips in these Facebook groups. There are posts about things like policies, pricing, marketing, etc. So it’s cool to read a post’s comments and get direct feedback from people doing the same thing as me all over the world.
I definitely learned I needed to increase my prices when I learned what other mobile massage therapists charged.
I feel like Facebook groups are the key because they are full of people in your actual industry who have already failed and learned best practices and strategies. Most people in these groups are ready to help you.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Marketing marketing marketing. There isn’t a way around it. But everyone says that and I still feel like it can be overwhelming and there are so many different strategies so let me tell you what has worked for me. Keep in mind I have a service based business not a product.
Use Canva to create social media marketing content. You need at least Instagram and definitely TikTok and probably Facebook too. I personally get a lot of new clients from TikTok video content. I get a lot of new clients from Instagram hashtags and when people tag me on their stories. For Facebook, which I personally post the least on, you will still get older people who tag your business on Facebook as well as being tagged. And referrals from when people share your post. You have to promote yourself. When you start to get clients, email marketing is king for getting repeat customers. Do specials from time to time. Especially if it’s on a new product or service that you’re really excited about. Also REVIEWS! In any form. On your website, screenshots, something! My marketing currently is not good but because I post 2-3 times on TikTok, because I make business updates on my Facebook and Instagram, and because I have 71 5-star reviews, I keep consistent business.
However because I plan on scaling my business to $10k a month. I will be hiring help. I will be investing in a social media strategist for the first time ever.
