We recently connected with Tanisha Marshall and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanisha, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Several years ago, I went through a rough time in my life, and it was around that time that art was reintroduced to me. When I was younger, I loved singing, drawing, embroidery, and teaching myself the piano, but it was all short-lived as I didn’t know I could pursue the path of creativity at that time. So, it wouldn’t be until 2018 when a friend would drag me to the craft store because I had been complaining that I wished I could wear colorful earrings like everyone else, as I struggled with a metal allergy which limited what type of earrings I could wear. When I started creating the earrings, something sparked within me. It was like the passion for being creative was reignited. I fell in love with creating earrings. I went from making beaded earrings to polymer clay earrings and now abstract art. At this time, when I found art again, I had been going through a rough time personally. But when I’d make art, time would fly, and my worries were no longer worries. I was enjoying life again. It really helped me heal, and from there, I knew I wanted to pursue art. I initially established my business making jewelry, and now I’m heavily focused on making Abstract Art.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started KAYTIA around 2019 while working a full-time job. At night, I enjoy focusing on making art and running my business. Currently, I am focused on creating original abstract art as well as art prints, greeting cards, and handmade jewelry. In the near future, I’ll offer commissions as well.
As a child, I didn’t love myself. I spent a lot of time trying to be someone I thought other people would like, but after a while, I realized that never works. This led me to spend a lot of time alone. I went through many years of not loving myself, wearing baggy clothes, and trying to hide from the world because I thought I wasn’t good enough for others to like or hang out with me. As I became an adult, there came a pivotal point in my life where I realized I am beautiful just the way I am. God doesn’t create junk; we are beautifully and wonderfully made. I decided that I was enough and that I am here for a reason. I started learning to accept myself, to appreciate who God made me to be. I believe that God will use me to reach certain people, people who are going through the same struggles, people who struggle to accept who they are. I’m on a mission to encourage anyone who will listen that we are all unique and the world needs us. We bring something special to the world; no one is exactly like you, and you will reach people I can’t reach. We need each other.
My hope is that art will bring joy, peace, and love into someone’s home, but also, I hope to empower others to love themselves completely and to open their hearts to following their true calling, whatever that may be.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When I’m making art, I work hard to allow myself to create and not think so much. I used to spend so much time thinking, planning, and trying to get things right because I never thought I was enough. But when I’m creating art, I allow myself to be free to make mistakes, and the best part is that if I paint something I don’t like, I can cover it up and try again. Creating abstract art has been a huge part of my journey of learning to accept who I am, and it has made a huge difference in my life. Through the process of making art, I have learned what I love, what I don’t like, and surprisingly, the journey of learning who I am is ongoing, and I love it. It’s not about being selfish; it’s about being okay with me so that I can also open myself up to truly love others. How can I love others if I don’t love myself?
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
While I talk a great deal about learning to love myself, my mission is to inspire the world or even just one person to be okay with who God made them. I hope to encourage others that it’s okay to be themselves; they are the way they are for a reason. Yes, we all need to make improvements within ourselves; that is a fact. But for many of us, we don’t even know who we are because we don’t believe we are good enough to be ourselves. If I can inspire just one person to accept themselves and follow their true passion, that is fulfilling. My journey is not just about me; it’s about being fully who I am so that I can reach others from a healed part of myself, so that I can help others do the same. Also, when my art is in someone’s home or business, my hope is that it brings joy, love, and peace when someone looks at it.
