We recently connected with Tanisha Cherry and have shared our conversation below.
Tanisha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Jumping headfirst into the world of being an influencer and content creator was sparked by my absolute obsession with capturing life’s moments through my trusty journals and good ol’ physical photos. There’s just something about flipping through those snapshots and reliving those epic nights out with friends that hits different. Once I got a Facebook account, it was a no-brainer for me to venture into the digital realm.
Imagine this: Facebook photo albums that spilled the beans on the antics of my nights out and Twitter rants that covered everything under the sun. It was all about embracing these platforms that gave me the freedom to just be myself, unfiltered and real.
While I was posting on these platforms, I made online friends with people in other parts of the world. Through those interactions I learned about a whole squad of individuals who were crafting their lives into blogs and YouTube videos. And let me tell you, it hit me like a ton of digital bricks – there’s a whole new dimension of connection and influence possible through this digital realm.
As I delved deeper, I uncovered influencers from all corners of North America. Then I eventually found some right here in my own city. It was like cracking open the door to a secret club of people who were making waves with their content.
Getting to know these local content creators wasn’t just eye-opening; it was like discovering a whole universe of creative possibilities. It wasn’t just about expressing myself anymore; it was about seizing opportunities. Collaborations, fancy events, and the potential to actually make a living from doing what I already adored? It was a total game-changer.
And then came Instagram – the ultimate visual playground where my storytelling found its true north. With a whole lot of heart, I managed to build a community that vibed with my content – folks who, like me, have a thing for unfiltered, genuine stories that capture the essence of life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a passionate content creator who thrives on creating fashion, beauty, and lifestyle content that sparks inspiration and empowers those who come across it. My journey began by sharing my perspective on my Instagram account and forging meaningful connections with fellow creators and PR contacts.
What truly sets me apart is the fact that I’ve managed to navigate this exciting industry without the backing of an influencer agency. From gracing the fashion week scene to negotiating five-figure campaigns and collaborating with outstanding brand partners, I’ve achieved these milestones through dedication and an authentic bond with my community. My content is a reflection of my genuine self. Every image, every word carries the essence of who I am and what I stand for. I believe in the power of storytelling, in embracing individuality, and in the journey of self-discovery that lies in every fashion choice, makeup brushstroke, and life adventure.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to unlearn was being content with just existing in a space. It’s a lesson deeply rooted in my identity as a Black creator. I came to realize that I don’t just belong in these spaces, I am meant to be here, taking up my rightful place. Far too often, the conditioning for Black creators is to be grateful for simply being present, without asserting our space or voice. But that mindset had to change.
I recognized the importance of not only being in the room but also owning my presence and the impact I bring. I’ve learned that I’m not just a spectator; I’m a vital participant, a contributor, and a voice that deserves to be heard. Unlearning the idea of being happy with mere presence has been a transformative journey, allowing me to embrace the power and significance of my own narrative.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my audience on social media was all about staying active and treating my page like a personal diary where vulnerability was my superpower. Back when I first started on Instagram, it was a totally different ballgame. But what remains constant is the essence of authenticity.
To those who are just embarking on the journey of building their social media presence, here’s the scoop: consistency is your best friend. Post content that resonates with you and your message, and don’t get too hung up on the numbers or engagement during those initial three months. Instead, focus on getting to know the platform, refining your style, and connecting with the community.
Remember, it just takes that one post – that single piece of content that truly connects – to make someone hit that magical ‘follow’ button. It might not happen overnight, but if you stick with it, you’re inching closer to the moment that can set everything into motion.
Also don’t quit or take a break. It might seem like a quick solution, but it’s like hitting pause on your potential success. Each post you create, every piece of content you share, it’s all part of your journey. So, don’t hit pause; keep hustling, keep learning, and keep posting. Trust me, continue paving the way for that one game-changing post to come to life.
