Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tanis Evans. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tanis, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When I was younger my mom got me an mannequin doll head to practice doing it’s hair. So I taught myself how to braid hair. Learning what I know now I would have definitely went to school to add even more skills to my profession. But I love only sticking to maintaining Locz. The most essential still would have to be great customer service…being able to relate to my clients and to make them come back after every appointment. The only obstacle that came in my was time and me. I already have a lot on my plate but not enough time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After high school I wanted to go to college and become a dentist. I didn’t get the support I needed, so college was out of the question. God had a different plan for me. I had someone that had Locz be didn’t have anyone to maintain their Locz,so that’s when it all began. After 1 then I had hundreds of clients. I definitely did plan on becoming a Loctician but God had a plan for me all along. As I got more clients I realized that I had to set up a booking site for my clients and get things more organized. I went from just shampooing and retwisting hair to making Loc extensions….reconstructing Locz, and crocheting Locz back into my client’s hair. When I get my clients they all come with their own hair issues that they want to work on. The top issues is having healthy hair. I have clients with thinning Locz, missing Locs, dry scap and more so I provide them services to correct those problem areas. I have my own moisturizing and hair growth oil I use on all my clients. For my retwist I use Loc N for clients that have Locz already and I use Taliah Waajid Lock It Up for my Kingz & Queenz thats may just be starting on their Loc journey. What sets me apart from any other Loctician is me being me…my personality and my style and techniques when it comes to maintaining Locz. I don’t care about the money its the crafting of they style my client’s select and the smiles I get afterwards that makes me love what I do. I’m most proud of how far God has brought me when I didn’t have plans on making a known name for myself and helping others, I’m so blessed! I would love for my potential clients to know that I love what I do and its all about making them happy and bringing their vision to life.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To be honest my goal is to make all of my clients feel special, because they are and make them look beautiful or handsome, but my main mission is to teach them about God. I have clients from New York, Atlanta, North Carolina, nurses, NFL players and as we live life and go on about our days…God is the one that made all things possible for us and blessed us with everything and we have to remind each other that without him nothing is possible. When I share that knowledge to one person and they will spread the knowledge of God to others…that’s my purpose of me continuing to do what I do.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
So before I used my Styleseat,I use to write everything down on paper before this booking app…lol I wish I had that back then. My husband is very helpful as well he has his own catering business…he knows a lot and I wish I had him back then.
