Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taniesha Horton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Taniesha, thanks for joining us today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
As a therapist who is passionate about every client that I work with, I have taken a particular interest in working with couples. One couple that I’ve worked with came to me looking for hope in a desperate situation. They were emotionally exhausted from spiraling in the same negative cycle for years and couldn’t see a way out. They both put in the work and committed to the therapeutic process, no matter how difficult it seemed at times. Fast forward about a year later, the couple is now married with a beautiful newborn baby.
This story makes me smile every time I think about it because I’ve walked with them through all of the challenges they had to overcome to get to this point. And to look back on how far they’ve come reminds me of why I chose this field. To help strengthen marriages and families. Every success story and every client reminds me that my work is much bigger than me and serves an immense purpose.
Taniesha, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, my name is Taniesha Horton and I am a licensed therapist in the state of California. I moved to Los Angeles, 7 years ago to pursue a Masters in Clinical social work from the University of Southern California. Upon graduating, I’ve worked for the LA county department of mental health and the LA unified school district. Most recently I’ve started my own private practice and became the CEO & Founder of Still Voice Therapy where I specialize in faith-based counseling, using various modalities including, but not limited to, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, attachment style and Psychodynamic approaches. And I specialize in a faith based approach which means that I am able to incorporate the values of individuals who identify as Christian.
I help individuals who may be struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem and relationship issues. More specifically, I am also passionate about working with couples who may be dealing with communication issues, breaking negative cycles, supporting each other through unhealed traumas, as well as conflict resolutions. One of the ways that I have found to be effective is to help clients understand their attachment styles and how they may affect their relationship.
What I hope that clients would gain from my therapeutic services is understanding of themselves, confidence that they can overcome any struggle, tools to be able to communicate, self regulate and interact with others in healthier ways and for each client to walk away feeling empowered while helping them to believe in themselves and recognize their strengths.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
This is a wonderful question. I still remember my first semester of graduate school like it was yesterday, one of my professors shared a quote with the class, that I still hold onto today. The quote stated “You can only bring your client, as far as you have brought yourself.” I wholeheartedly, believe this quote to be true. While training and knowledge is of great importance; actually doing the work on ourselves is what will help us connect with our clients in a more authentic and genuine way. Our ideal clients tend to be somewhat of a version of our past or current selves and if we aren’t healed it will be easy to get triggered and feel stuck with trying to help our clients through their journey when we haven’t already brought ourselves through…I strongly believe that having your own personal therapist to process traumas and unhealthy thinking patterns would definitely be helpful in succeeding in this field.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that my friends, associates and clients have helped build my reputation within my market because many of my referrals have come through word of mouth…I received my first client from a friend who shared my website with someone she knew, because she believed in my skill set and saw the value of the specific niche that I was providing. When I started gaining more clients, they started to refer me to other people that they knew who were also looking for a therapist because they begin to start healing and they, too, saw the value in the therapeutic process. As my reputation continues to expand within the marked, I notice that the clients trust the professionalism and expertise that I offer and it motivates me to continue to gain more knowledge and training to further expand and improve upon my skills.
