We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tania FLORES a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tania, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
When I was 8 months pregnant I knew I no longer wanted to be in a job where I was sitting wasting away my life in a small office, I knew my life was made for so much more. I would pray daily for the lord to change my path for what he intended and not what I wanted. Soon after that my health started going downhill in my pregnancy that I stopped trying at work because I had no energy and felt sick constantly. A week before my birthday I was let go of my job and what seemed like such a heartbreaking thing for me that had me saying “why would they do this to me?! a week before my birthday?! 8 months pregnant?!” turned out to be the greatest blessing I could ever pray for. The lord knew if I wasn’t going to move, he was going to move me! Soon after that I started focusing more on my pregnancy and where I wanted to go in my photography. I knew that I wanted to work for a magazine one day and I had to start changing the way I did things if my work ever was going to get noticed. I prayed and Fasted and my way of thinking started changing. I began creating things out of my heart and thats when things began to change! My work had been finally featured in multiple magazines and it helped me do one of my goals for my work to be featured in PhotoVOGUE! I was afraid at first and thinking of going back to work at 8 months pregnant but I am so happy and blessed I took that risk and started working on ME! and what the lord wanted me to do!
Tania, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a photographer in the Houston Texas area I specialize in Fine Art and studio/ Documentary photography. I have been doing photography for 9 years, and have been featured in multiple online and hard copy magazines. What I am the most proud of is my love for people and my work. I believe my work shows the love I have for people because it is capturing their beauty, their culture, their love, a moment.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Right now I have one MAJOR goal! and that is to one day photograph for big brands like Versace, Balenciaga, and work as a photographer for VOGUE. I want to give my children the understanding that when you have a dream and God you can do it all! I want to show them anything is possible.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Definitely Facebook, I get 100% of my clients through word of mouth and social media! It is so important to advertise and post EVERYTHING!
