We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tania Becker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tania below.
Hi Tania, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
What does it take to be successful? I think a big helping of curiosity!
In the good times – curiosity keeps me moving forward, it excites me about innovation and change. Less TV time, more time learning about what’s going on in my industry and in the world! Learning energizes me.
In challenging times – curiosity takes the emphasis off of blame. Blaming yourself, or blaming others. Staying curious gives me focus on solving issues and not compounding the problem. Difficult personalities are in every industry and for me, staying curious and open gives me a better chance of rapport – with even the most difficult! I try to bring in the warmth and stay connected.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I do hair in the fashion industry. So every day is unique!
It’s about creating a character, the inspirational person wearing the clothes.
I love working with the creative director in creating a hairstyle that will best inspire and connect the brand with the customer. This speaks to my geek self! The collaboration and problem solving is everything!
Aside from my work – work-ethic is also key. Being reliable, a solid communicator, and having warmth on set – these are things that I value.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
These days for me, being offered a high paying gig is only a part of it’s draw.
– I value a great team, and fun and inspiring work days.
– I value pushing hair boundaries and creative work.
– I value going to unique places. My job has brought me to Paris, Milan, London, New York, Hawaii…and shooting at ranches, beaches and decadent places! I live for stories. To date, I’ve never been to Texas – I hope a job comes up there some day!
Just one or 2 of these elements are needed for me to get excited about a job!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I spent 17 years travelling 2 months out of every year working backstage at NY, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks, as well as the Victoria’s Secret Show. I was doing 40-50 shows per year! I absolutely loved the work – the discipline of my craft that came with being backstage was invaluable.
What did I have to unlearn? When it was time to stop the travel, I had to learn how not to! I tried for several years and kept getting drawn back. I loved the craft, I loved doing hair. But I look back and can’t believe we did the travel for so long – NYC, show, straight to the airport, 5 hour red-eye to London, straight to a show…rinse, repeat…we were jet-lagged and ragged both physically and mentally…most of the time!
Absolutely no regrets…but happy this part of my career is in the rear-view now. Now I even feel like going on personal trips, hoping to go to Australia soon. And a British Columbia road trip!
