We were lucky to catch up with Tani Wojcinski recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tani, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
When I work with women, there are a lot of old ideas and thought patterns that we need to shift. I help women to lose weight, but I consider my work MORE than just weight loss, because every aspect of their health and life is affected by the changes we help them to make.
I teach women that they will perform best in a FED state, so the old paradigm of just slashing calories to the bare minimum needs to change. We explore the best ways to move their bodies, and often need to adapt around old injuries and possibly new dysfunctions. We work on shifting negative thought patterns and replacing them with more helpful and positive ideas. My goal is always to make their mind, as well as their body, a more pleasant place to live.
My favorite part is usually in week 2 of our program, when women report how amazing they feel. They’re eating whole foods, naturally low in sugar and high in fiber, and they feel amazing. They have energy, they’re sleeping better, they have less aches and pains, and they actually are enjoying the foods we are recommending.
We had a woman who recently went through a program with us. She was older, in the 60-70 year range, so weight loss can be challenging post menopause. She wasn’t sure she would be successful, but she liked our energy and the philosophy we bring to our programs so she gave it a shot.
She was inspiring, she came to every training and coaching call, she jumped on the meal plans and learned how to adapt them for her and her partner’s needs. She began exploring new ways to exercise and she took all of the mindset work to heart. She lost weight, averaging 3 lbs a week, but more importantly, she learned a healthier way of eating, living, and thinking. She improved her own health as well as her partner’s, and it’s truly life changing for them both.
Tani, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a personal trainer and health coach, I specialize in weight loss and behavior change. Sometimes I laugh, because I really don’t fit in the fitness industry. I wasn’t an athlete, I was usually picked last for the team, and was often the first one tagged “out”. I don’t naturally LOVE to exercise, I was a picky eater and basically grew up eating PBJ’s and Mac & Cheese. I fell off of my step in the first step aerobics class I ever tried…
Thankfully, in college I landed in Exercise Physiology as a major and I decided to learn how to be a fitness instructor. I’m actually grateful for my experiences because I have a deeper understanding of what “normal” people think about what we do as fit pros… My philosophy is “there’s always a way” and much of what I do is adapting exercises so they fit the individual.
I’ve spent 24 years helping women learn to move their bodies and shift towards healthier habits. Not everyone wants to run a triathlon or do burpees. Sometimes it’s just about having less pain and learning to love your body as she is.
This is why we founded “Curvy Girl,” to help shed the old ideas that a size 2 is what every woman “should” strive for. Instead, we want to celebrate women where they are now, and help them to find balance in their lives.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Ironically, in Feb of 2020 I attended a fitness conference and spent the entire weekend attending trainings on launching your own business and training online.
I knew this is the direction I wanted to go, but I was afraid of everything that online coaching entailed. I’m not the most technologically adept person; I was trained in biomechanics and human psychology, not software and marketing.
As we all know, by March 2020 that decision had been made for me. The world shut down, and fitness and coaching changed as we know it.
Like many coaches and course creators I thought I would hop online, offer an amazing program, and people would line up for my services. And like many people discover, it’s a LOT harder and more involved than that. I remember at one point, a business coach said to me, “just create a landing page” as if it were the easiest thing in the world. I had NO idea what a landing page even was!
It has been a LONG 2 years and I can’t believe how much I’ve learned and grown in that time.
To be honest, I love the marketing aspect of our business. It’s the part where I get to share information, teach and inspire women. I love connecting with women on social media and helping to change their perception of weight loss and health management.
I love when women decide to pursue a deeper relationship with me inside of my coaching programs, because I know it can be life changing for them if they are open to the process and the lessons.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As you can imagine, the weight loss industry is filled with a lot of noise and a ton of misinformation. It’s extremely hard to stay true to our message and voice when the world is constantly telling us to shift, or that we’d be more profitable if we would change our philosophy and sell products or supplements..
The sad part is that so much of the diet industry is smoke and mirrors, before and after photos are often taken in the same day, or even purchased from folks that have never used the products or programs being sold.
We help women to lose weight without pills, shakes or gimmicks. We lean into simple nutrition, gentle fitness and behavior shifts for a lifetime change. This takes time. It’s not a quick fix
We attract the women who are sick of the roller coaster. Who have wasted hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on products and gimmicks that do not work. We get the women who don’t want to take a pill or medication, but recognize that lifestyle changes should be the first treatment for preventable diseases.
Traditional weight loss tactics create a revolving door of customers, lose weight quickly, gain it back just as fast. We refuse to buy into this model. I don’t want my clients working with me forever, I want to teach them the skills and habits they need for lasting success.
I think this is what sets us apart. We are committed to changing the conversation and we attract women who are tired of the old paradigm. I don’t count calories in my programs. I don’t force women to give up bread or pasta. I don’t ask them to wake up at 4am to do crazy workouts. There is a better way.
