We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tangia Al-awaji Estrada a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tangia, appreciate you joining us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents and grandparents were the epitome of entrepreneurial spirit and resilience. Growing up, I saw my grandparents run a successful commercial janitorial business, and later, I witnessed my mother and grandparents’ journey as they opened a Mexican restaurant. They ran it for ten years before eventually selling it, leaving a legacy of hard work and dedication. Watching them build and sustain these businesses taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of community.
Some of my fondest memories come from spending time at the restaurant during summer breaks. I’d help out where I could—taking orders, busing tables, or chatting with customers. There, I learned the value of a strong work ethic and the joy of creating something that brings people together. But beyond their business ventures, my parents did something even more impactful: they allowed me the freedom to explore my interests. They never dictated what I should learn or focus on, allowing me to dive into whatever sparked my curiosity. Whether it was reading about far-off places, experimenting with writing, or dabbling in theater, I had the space to discover who I was and what I loved.
This freedom was essential because it allowed me to carve out my own path. I could explore different fields, try new things, and ultimately, decide the direction I wanted to take in life. This sense of autonomy and support has been a cornerstone in my journey. It’s why I felt confident enough to start Tangia Renee PR and Brand Discovery, knowing that I had a solid foundation of creativity, resilience, and a passion for storytelling.
So, in essence, what my parents did right was twofold: they modeled entrepreneurship in action and provided an environment where my interests could flourish. This combination has profoundly impacted my life and career, shaping me into the businesswoman and creative thinker I am today. And, of course, they taught me the importance of a good sense of humor—because sometimes, the best way to tackle a challenge is with a smile and a laugh.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into this field began with a rich background in community organizing, media relations, business development, and campaigning, giving me a unique perspective on the power of storytelling to shape perceptions and create meaningful connections.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Building a business has taught me that resilience is not just a trait but a skill you have to practice repeatedly as a business owner. There have been countless times when the challenges felt overwhelming, and I honestly thought about throwing in the towel and finding a traditional job. But then, I remember who I am and the lessons I’ve learned from watching my family build their businesses.
Growing up, I saw my grandparents run a successful commercial janitorial service, and my mother and grandparents opened and sustained a Mexican restaurant for ten years. Their perseverance and hard work left a lasting impression on me. Whenever I face a tough day, I remind myself of their example and the grit they displayed. This gives me the strength to get up the next day and go after it again.
One particular moment stands out in my journey. I faced a major setback early on when a significant project fell through at the last minute. It was a blow, and the temptation to just find a job was strong. But I took a step back, reminded myself of my family’s legacy, and bet on myself. I restructured my approach, reached out to my network, and within a few months, secured an even bigger project that helped propel my business forward.
I’ve learned that betting on myself is crucial because every time I don’t, I regret it. Even when I’ve taken jobs to play it safe, it’s only a matter of time before I itch to do my own thing again. Resilience means pushing through those doubts and staying true to my passion for storytelling and community building. Every challenge is a lesson, and every setback is a setup for a comeback.
So, I keep pushing forward, inspired by my family’s resilience and belief in my vision. Building a business is not easy, but the moments of perseverance define our success.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Three things have helped me build my reputation in the market: making it easy to find my business, making it easy to work with me, and, most importantly, doing great work.
First, I ensure that my business is easy to find. In today’s digital age, you’re missing out on opportunities if potential clients can’t find you or get in touch with you easily. I’ve invested time and resources to ensure Tangia Renee PR and Brand Discovery has a strong online presence. This visibility is crucial for attracting new clients and staying top of mind. Also, I make it easy for potential clients to contact me. They are one click away from connecting directly to me. Do not ever make your client search for a way to reach you. You will lose them before you meet them.
Second, I prioritize being easy to work with. I know from personal experience that it doesn’t matter how good your work is if you’re difficult to work with. Whether through streamlined processes or a positive attitude, I strive to make every interaction pleasant and efficient. Even on tough days, I put my best foot forward because I want my clients to have a good experience meeting me. I want them to feel at ease and see my joy in helping their businesses grow.
Finally, and most importantly, I focus on doing great work. My clients often tell me that our work together has allowed their businesses to reach the next level and provided renewed clarity that opens up new possibilities. I’m incredibly proud of that. Great work speaks for itself, but it must also be complemented by accessibility and ease of collaboration.
Building a solid reputation is about being visible, approachable, and delivering exceptional results. Focusing on these three areas has created lasting relationships with my clients and helped their businesses thrive.
