We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tanesha Triplett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tanesha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Tutus By TT was created with a simple tutu that put a smile of a child’s face. At that moment, I realized that Tutus By TT could help build confidence in young girls all over. The goal wasn’t just to get sales from this. It was to make sure that every girl regardless of color, size, or personality had that same smile. Being a plus size child (and now woman) I had struggled off and on with my confidence. I knew that there was that one thing I could put on rather it be shoes, a dress, or a hair style that could boost my confidence. I want my tutus to give every girl and woman that wears them the same boost. Tutus By TT grew and when I knew what my mission was, I started a girls mentoring group called Tutus With A Purpose. Tutus With A Purpose assist and teach confidence building, leadership skills, self love and care, and also the importance of giving back (community service). Although, mentoring is slow right now the goal is to build it as big as possible, but also helping as many girls as possible.
With the inspiration of the mentoring program, I created a coloring book called My Thoughts Matter that teaches the same things, but also has free space for young girls to express their true thoughts.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Tanesha Triplett owner of Tutus By TT and founder of Tutus With a Purpose mentoring program. Tutus by TT was started in June of 2017. A hobby really turned into a business. I was sick, on a leave from work and Youtube was my best friend. Crafts have always been my thing, but never considering tutus as an option. I made a few tutus for friends and family members children and from there I realized I had something special with the smiles a simple tutu put on the girls faces. I create tutus, custom t-shirts and have accessories as well. I like to call it the ” One Stop Girly Shop”
I feel my tutu business is different from others because my goal is not only to create something beautiful for a young girl to wear on a special occasion, but it is also to know that her confidence is all the way up while wearing it. I want her to know that although you have this tutu on today…keep the same confidence everyday as if that tutu was on.
I am most proud of the lives that I have touched. Knowing that I can make a difference or be an example for someone that looks like me , makes me happy. It feeds my soul.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I funded Tutus By TT with my personal funds. At the time I was working a full time job so I was able to purchase the materials and equipment needed with the funds I had available. I was also gifted by my husband and my Dad some of the equipment I have. So everything didn’t happen overnight but it for sure came together.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that everything would come to me easily. I expected the orders to come because I have a lot of family and associates. I expected them to support me by shopping. And in reality, that is not the case nor is that an obligation. Support comes in many forms such as sharing post, telling a friend, liking, commenting etc. I’ve learned that meeting new people and going outside of your inner circle will for sure help spread the wings of your business.
