We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tanesha McQueen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tanesha below.
Hi Tanesha, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I came into this world being a self thinker and being strong willed. Never really ever second guessing myself or worth. I owe a lot of that ability to my mother. I have created my whole brand Styling Her Esteem around what my mother did right. My mother let me be me and encouraged it! She spoke life into me and believed in me. Even when I was very outspoken and some parents would have tried to correct their child or make them do what they felt was right, not my mama. My mom told me about a time we went to visit a daycare when I was about 3 and while on the tour I asked, “where are the babies at, are they black, I’m BLACK.” I said all this and rolled up my sleeve and rubbed my arm so the lady could see my beautiful dark skin. My mom ain’t know what to say lol but she didn’t correct me. The lady showing us around, just said, she’s just proud of her color.” She was right about that. I was then and still am now, extremely proud of me and all that makes me who I am! There are so many pressures of the world to make individuals want to be like someone else. I’ve never had that desire and I want so many others to feel comfortable in the own skin and being. Like my mama told me, “you are beautiful and wonderfully made.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Tanesha McQueen a wife of 17 years and mother to the four J’s and business owner of multiple businesses. The business where I feel I make the most impact is Styling Her Esteem better known S.H.E., where we focus on building the self esteem, worth and image of oneself. I do this first by being an example. Not in cockiness or thinking I’m all that and above anyone, but by walking with my head held high, having a high sense of self and knowing I’m below no one. I walk in my authority, like my mother would say. I then style esteems through my YouTube videos, share encouraging social media post, and I still provide select hairstyles to some clients. In addition, I released a personal development workbook titled Becoming a Whole You, a childrens book titled What if I told you that you are Beautiful and a new personal development book will be released soon dealing with healing the inner child. S.H.E. sells self esteem merch or any custom merch you need to feel better or for your own business. We also have candles and bath salts for your self care days. Self investment will be your greatest asset that provides the largest ROI. You can never win, if your not right within. Mind, Body & Soul all need to be in alignment. So Styling Her Esteem is a source to help get you there or keep you there.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn volunteering to help everyone and carrying other peoples weight. I’ve always had enough on my own plate but helping people fix their problems or making it less a burden on them was something I was constantly doing. It all stemmed from childhood trauma though but when I did my work and an awaken happened I started to think about all I’ve done to help others and nothing was done to help lessen my plate. I had a lot that could have been helped with but I never asked, and assumed everyone thought like me and would just volunteer, but I was definitely wrong. I am a person of service though and will always help anyone until I leave this earth but I have learned to only help those who help me in return even if it’s not in the same way I helped them. Reciprocity is how I do things these days because givers will always give, and takers will always take. No one should ever take advantage of one’s kindness. As much as you take, you should give and show gratitude.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am a walking example of the message I spread in my brand. My message is about loving yourself and treating you self with care, and I practice it, like religion. So people come and people spend where they can see results. The energy and love I give my customers is real. I provide them with value and inspiration. As a result Styling Her Esteem has a great reputation and return customers.
