We recently connected with Taneé Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Taneé , appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I am a licensed nail technician so my first time making a skin care product was a foot scrub that my clients were able to add on to their pedicure service. Around this same time I was in search of an all natural product that would help with hyperpigmentation and that wouldn’t irritate my sensitive skin. I began to experiment and ended up making a facial scrub that my skin loved. Using this product on a consistent basis it drastically lightened my dark spots and evened out my skin tone. I fell in love with formulating, it became therapeutic for me. I began making products to gift people as well as fund raising for mission trips I took during that time. The feedback I got was insane and gave me the confidence I needed to start my business. Fast forward a couple years, I was diagnosed with a thyroid disease. I discovered the key to my healing was connected to the foods I ate, the things I consumed, and the energy I allowed into my spirit. After transitioning to a vegan diet and changing my lifestyle my health did a complete 180.
I realized that when it comes to your skin, your mental health as well as the food you consume, they all play a role.
You can’t have one without the other, just like the Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. There were and still are many all natural products on the market but not compares for mine.
I am passionate about educating people on the importance of taking care of your overall health. At Godly Glow we believe that it’s more than just skin, your glow starts from within. In order to get that glowing skin you not only have to use a quality product, but also make sure you’re prioritizing your mental health and that you’re consuming foods that heal. We are intentional about building relationships with our customers and assisting them wherever they are on their journey. We provide resources for them to thrive in the area of nutrition and self care. I get so excited about this because I am living proof that what I profess works. I healed my body from an autoimmune disease by incorporating these three things. It has and will never be about my capabilities or what I can do, this is Gods idea. I know that he anointed my hands and gave me this vision in order for me to bring HOPE to the world through skincare.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was introduced to the skincare industry when I was in beauty school obtaining my license as a nail technician. My nail instructor at the time taught us how to make basic scrubs for the hands and feet and that opened the door. I began to research and experiment with different formulas and discovered which ingredients were most beneficial for hyperpigmentation and lightening dark spots, which is what I battled with at the time. My former esthetic classmates taught me how to truly take care of my skin, and they assisted me in this process.
Our target audience at Godly Glow are those who are looking to lighten dark spots, scarring and even out their skin tone, as well as those with eczema and really dry skin. Currently we offer body and facial scrubs and body butter. Once I become an esthetician I will be able to assist my customers even further on their specific skincare needs. I am passionate about educating others on the importance of taking care of your temple. People see my skin and think it’s just the products I use, I quickly let them know that it takes work to obtain that Godly Glow. Being intentional about your mental health right, eating a clean diet, in addition to using a quality product, is the the key to achieving that inner glow. It’s more than just selling a product for me, I want my customers to know that they are seen and heard; I do this by building relationships and getting to know them. Every purchase made comes with a scripture or positive message to remind you of who you are in Christ. My goal is to bring HOPE in this dark world through skincare.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started with $500 that I received from working the polls on voting day back in 2022. There was an upcoming beauty event that I had an opportunity to be a vendor at. I used that money to pay for my spot at the event. I still needed money to get supplies to make the products and I was able to raise $2-$300 more, so all in all I started out with $7-$800.
I’ve supported and worked hard for everyone else’s vision(s), but for the first time in my life I invested time, effort, money, and energy for MY busineses. I thought I was crazy and almost backed out. But I am so glad I pressed through the resistance, because that changed my life forever. It helped me to bet on myself, to believe that I could do this. I learned that it takes money to make money and you have to be willing to take the first step. If you allow fear to cripple you, you won’t ever see what’s on the other side.
I didn’t sell out for that event nor did I break even, but the lesson for me was that I have to start somewhere. That I have to believe In myself more than anyone else does and that I am fully capable of running a successful business.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The name of my company is called Godly Glow. I knew God gave me the name but I initially I didn’t know what that truly meant. Shortly after my launch event I entered in a dark space mentally that challenged my “Godly Glow.” I realized that it was much bigger than just a name it was a way of life. That in order for me to preach/teach others about their Godly Glow, I had to go through a process first, and I found out that I didn’t believe for myself what I professed to others. That was a hard pill to swallow. I took a pause on business in order to strengthen my mental health and be able to practice what I preached. It was a difficult period for me, and I was so frustrated and wanted to give up many times, but I knew that what I was feeling was temporary. I learned that resistance isn’t a bad thing, that any time it comes I shouldn’t let it discourage me but instead motivate me and allow it to propel me into my next. This was something I couldn’t go around I had to grow through it in order for a new version of myself to be birthed.
