We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tanaya Roy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tanaya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?

I’ve always been part of the healthcare/wellness industry, having worked as the Area Manager for Massage Envy for years, and later as District Manager for BODYROK or Managing Partner with StretchLab but deep down, I was always drawn to the Beauty industry. After many years in Corporate America, I realized it was time to follow my heart and shape my dream. That’s when Amazing Lash Delmar happened to me, and it felt like destiny.

The business wasn’t in the best shape when I took over it was in negative cash flow. But I knew where to start: I listened. I listened to my team, understanding their challenges and their hopes. Next step was taking care of the existing clients. Each one of them mattered, so I took the time to personally connect with them, show appreciation, and build trust.

For me, the biggest challenge wasn’t just getting people through the door but making sure that once they did, they felt seen and valued. That’s the real heart of client retention. Of course, I also knew how crucial it was to have a strong digital marketing team—making sure we were visible to new clients.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’ve always been a naturally curious person, eager to explore new things and dive into different genres. Learning excites me, and I believe growth comes when we combine that curiosity with fun. For me, if there’s joy in what you’re doing, the possibilities are endless.

While I love to have fun, I’m also very disciplined when it comes to certain things. I believe in the power of practice—whatever it is, if you work at it consistently, you’ll get better, and that’s a principle I live by. As a dancer and theater artist, I’ve dedicated myself to mastering these crafts, my passion of learning has led me to some amazing experiences, including winning Mrs. California 2022, Mrs. Bharat 2023, and Miss South Asia World 2023.

Being presentable is something I value deeply, not just in appearance, but in the way I present my work. I believe that when you take pride in yourself, it reflects in everything you do, and I apply that belief in my career and creative passions. Whether on stage, in business, or in life.

Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?

Yes. As you must have known by now I own Amazing Lash Studio at Delmar, San Diego , California. Few TIPS for the FIRST TIME BUSINESS OWNERS. If you’re serious about living your dream and owning a business, TIP NUMBER ONE first and most important step is being willing to work with people. A thriving business is built on a strong team, so you have to enjoy that collaboration. SECOND, you must be ready to take risks, whether the outcome is good or bad, it’s all on you. There will be sleepless nights worrying about payroll and operating costs, but giving up should never be an option.
THIRD, always have at least one month’s working capital ready. FORTH, if you’re considering buying an existing business, become a client at first to understand their customer service. If you’re starting something new, work in similar businesses to gain valuable experience. FIFTH, the price you pay for a business is crucial. If it has positive cash flow, it’s a seller’s market, and the price could be up to three times the annual cash flow. But if the business is operating at a loss, it’s a buyer’s market, and you can offer what you think it’s worth.

Finally, don’t be afraid of making changes, but do it slowly. Your employees need to feel your support and understand that any changes you implement are in their best interest.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?

Most effective way is, reaching out to the existing Members / clients giving them perks to bring their friends in. It works 100% of the time. Then comes digital marketing.
